Dear Next Generation

Dear Next Generation

I’m sorry we failed you. I’m sorry that you won’t have leaders to look to the same way I had leaders to look to growing up. I’m sorry that you guys must live in here fear of losing your families, friends and anyone who has had an impacted on your life. I’m sorry that you guys won’t be able to speak what you believe to be true because those who are in control are going to try and control the words that we try to inform other people about the world. I’m sorry that we live in a world that people won’t welcome you for who you are on the inside or who you are on the outside. I'm sorry that you won't have a role model to look up to on how to treat other people from around the world and even from the inside of the world. I'm sorry that you don't have adults in your life that won't be role models to you because they are to busy doing what other people are telling them and not looking out for you because the money talks louder then our voices do at times. I hope that you stand strong where the generations before you have failed, I hope that you guys speak up and stand strong where the rest of us have failed and spoken with words of hate. I hope that you see a bully who takes control and leadership and a nation in favor from them and their friends, I hope you don't let them get in control and if a person is saying harmful and nasty things about other people that you don't back down and let that person roll over you and other people because they don't see you as a human or even as good enough person to be seen with them. I hope that one day you can wake up knowing that your family and friends will always be there for you and that you can be there for them. That you won't be seen as a number or a monster, but as the next leaders of the world who will do better then the past generations, that when you see a black man walking down the street you wave hello instead of running away in fear because he could hurt you, that when you see two women kissing you don't force them to change who they are because it hurts you, and that if you see a woman working hard to break the glass ceiling that was build by the men before us, that you won't believe that you have the right to grab her p*ssy because you believe she wants it and because you have the right to get away with it. I pray for you guys that you can see where we failed and you learn from us and where we didn't fly, you guys soar. I hope that you guys bring peace and know that you don't have the right to treat anyone the way that our leaders treat us. That you are just as important as you were from the inside of the womb. Be Strong, Be Kind and most of all break down those walls that we have put up to keep everyone apart.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
