Dear New Members: Welcome!

Dear New Members: Welcome!

It has been a long week; actually, it's been a long month. Preparing for recruitment takes so much time and energy from all members of the Greek community. But, we made it. Recruitment season is over and all the houses on the row get to brag about their fabulous new members. Little hunting will begin, as obsession with the new members sets in. They have no idea how much they are already loved and what amazing experiences are on the way.

So, new members, I write this to you. Congratulations. You are officially a part of one of the most rewarding groups in the world.  Members of the Greek community are some of the most influential leaders on UCLA’s campus. From the Student Alumni Association, to the Pediatric Aids Coalition, USAC, and everything in between you can find Greeks there, helping to make UCLA the best it can be. We put on events, create new ideas, and have helped to maintain the shining record that UCLA has.

The success people from the Greek community have does not end at graduation. Many world leaders, actors, and CEOs were Greek in their college days. Basically, you are in good company. You, new members, are about to embark on the best years of your life with some of the best people around. There is no telling what you will be able to accomplish with your brothers or sisters by your side. So many doors are about to open.

I hope that, through recruitment, you were able to find a home away from home, a support system, and a family. I would have never imagined that I would be in this place. Kappa Delta has helped me to become the best version of myself and realize my true potential. It has given me the opportunity to join new clubs, take on exciting internships, and even to write for you, today. Without Kappa Delta, something would be missing from my life.

I am so happy for all the UCLA students who have now found that something for themselves. It has been said, “From the outside looking in, you can never understand it. From the inside looking out, you can never explain it.” You are about to see just how true this is.

Also, keep in mind that The Odyssey is still looking for interns. The application is now open and available at www.theodysseyonline.com/apply. We are looking for dedicated writers and photographers for the 2014-2015 school year. Staff members will have an internship through the Olympia Media Group in New York, but work straight from the UCLA campus. There are even opportunities to get paid. All members of the Greek system are welcome and encouraged to apply.

In honor of Mother’s Day, I have been thinking of all the things my mom does for my family and me. Although I couldn’t write nearly all of them, here are a few things that moms do for us.

They find that shirt that’s right in front of you, but just you can’t seem to find.

10 Reasons To Thank Your Best Friend

Take the time to thank that one friend in your life you will never let go of.

Thank You on wooden blocks

1. Thank you for being the one I can always count on to be honest.

A true friend will tell you if the shirt is ugly, or at least ask to borrow it and "accidentally" burn it.

2. Thank you for accepting me for who I am.

A best friend will love you regardless of the stale french fries you left on the floor of your car, or when you had lice in 8th grade and no one wanted to talk to you.

Everybody gets sick once in a while, but getting sick while in college is the absolute worst. You're away from home and your mom who can take care of you and all you really want to do is just be in your own bed. You feel like you will have never-ending classwork to catch up on if you miss class, so you end up going sick and then it just takes longer to get better. Being sick in college is really tough and definitely not a fun experience. Here are the 15 stages that everyone ends up going through when they are sick at college.

Do as I say, not as I do.

Your eyes widen in horror as you stare at your phone. Beads of sweat begin to saturate your palm as your fingers tremble in fear. The illuminated screen reads, "Missed Call: Mom."

Growing up with strict parents, you learn that a few things go unsaid. Manners are everything. Never talk back. Do as you're told without question. Most importantly, you develop a system and catch on to these quirks that strict parents have so that you can play their game and do what you want.

"Friends" maybe didn’t have everything right or realistic all the time, but they did have enough episodes to create countless reaction GIFs and enough awesomeness to create, well, the legacy they did. Something else that is timeless, a little rough, but memorable? Living away from the comforts of home. Whether you have an apartment, a dorm, your first house, or some sort of residence that is not the house you grew up in, I’m sure you can relate to most of these!
