Dear Mom, From Your Daughter Away At College

A letter written to my role model.

Dear Mom, From Your Daughter Away At College
Sylvana

Dear Mom,

... As I am away at college.

I don't really know where to start but "Thank You" seems like a good place. This probably goes without saying, but thank you just for being you.

Thank you for being my biggest supporter since day one.

You were always there for me. You sat through countless dance recitals and talent shows, even though I have two left feet. From cheering me on when I fell off the balance beam at Gymnastics meets, to when I was walking across the stage at graduation. You cheered me on from the front row and always made sure I felt proud of myself. I knew whatever happened, you would always be there at the end with open arms and a smile on your face.

Thank you for always having my best interests in mind.

You always pushed and encouraged me to be the best version of myself that I could be. You have more faith in me than I think I do. You know when I could do better and never let go until I reached my full potential. This is where we sometimes bump heads because I get lazy and you would just want to see me succeed. It took me going to college to realize this one, but I am forever grateful for your constant nagging and telling me to do things (except when I have to do the dinner dishes... I'lll never be happy about that).

Thank you for being the best role model anyone could ask for.

You are the most selfless person I have ever met, and that I will probably ever meet. From the little things like letting me have the last scoop of ice-cream in the carton to the big things like making sure everyone feels your unconditional love. I see it in the way you interact with the people around you, too. You give so much of yourself to your friends and the community, it inspires me to be just like you.

Thank you for always being there to talk.

This one is especially relevant while I am away at college. I know I cut down on the facetimes and phone calls, but every time I see your name pop up on my phone, I know you will make me smile. From pointless conversations about our days to me not knowing how to do laundry, you are always there to talk.

And lastly, thank you for being my best friend.

I know for sure I don't say it enough but you truly are a one of a kind friend. You've had patience and grace, not only with me but also with my sisters. I have made some mistakes and you held my hand the entire time while I tried to fix them. We've laughed together and we've cried together. I wouldn't want anyone else in my corner as I go through life. And while I still have some growing up to do (even though I am a major) I aspire to be at least half the woman that you are.

So although I don't say it or show it enough, just know I love you forever and that will never stop!

Happy Birthday to the best mom out there!

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
