Dear Mom, I Would Like A Dog

A Poem Dedicated to you mom… because I want a dog

Dear Mom, I Would Like A Dog

I have dreamed of getting a dog for years! To be exact, I remember first asking for a dog when I was 9 years old. I don’t really know where my obsession blossomed from, but I just loveddogs. They were cuddly, furry, and just overall the coolest pet I have ever encountered.

I knew it was no surprise when mom always said, “no,” every time I asked her for one, so I kind of accepted that I wouldn’t get a dog just yet. So to fill the void, I had a build-a-bear Westie and a stuffed animal wiener dog, awaiting the day that I would gain a ‘man’s best friend’.

Well, 13 years have passed… and still, I am dogless. I know I have a fish and a stinky little brother, but nothing compares to the stinky wet dog smell that will help me enjoy life a little more. I would love to be cuddled by an animal that loves you unconditionally just because you feed it steak flavored treats after dinner. I would love to have a pet that I could take long walks on the beach with. I would love to have a pet where I can splurge my next paycheck on (because splurging for your brother and fish gets old).

Yes mom, I would like a dog. A fish can only get you so far in life, but with a dog, you make a lifelong friend. With a dog, my stress would be gone and my life will finally fall into place.

So to emphasize that I would like a dog, Mom, I have written a very nice poem expressing my interest in gaining a new member of the family. Here we go…

Ode to getting a dog, since my future is currently a fog

Oh mom, how far I have come…

I once dreamed of getting a man’s best friend
when will this dream end?

I have been asking for a very long time,
so long, that I have run out of words to rhyme.

You might think that I’m not ready
But if I wait any longer, my sanity will be unsteady.

From dachshunds, to shih tzus, and st. bernards,
to corgis, and pugs… mom, this decision isn’t hard.

“I’m ready for a dog”, how many times shall I repeat
this silly phrase, don’t you think that having a dog would be real neat?!

But unfortunately, I still only have a fish,
and though Bob is cool, a dog is my number one wish!

I’ve cried long nights, and read Puppy 101 Books,
I know it takes hard work and I have taken notes in a notebook.

So please, Mom, I beg you, help my dream come true,
Because having a dog not only benefits me, but also you J

Do I sound convincing yet? Do I not sound convincing yet? Let me know in the comments below! And feel free to send this to my mother… because indeed, I would LOOOVEE a dog as it has been my dream for more than a decade.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
