Dear Mike Pence: Basic Biology And Other Things You Need To Hear
The Washington Times

Dear Mike Pence,

I am perplexed by how you and Donald Trump were elected our next Vice President and President of The United States, but since you were, I feel the need to enlighten on basic biology and other things you need to hear.

The global population is expected to grow to 10.9 billion people by 2100. Meanwhile, the Earth's temperature is increasing, as well, making glaciers and icecaps melt, which means the sea level will rise -- it’s predicted to rise 1-6 feet by the end of the century. This will force around 1 billion people who live in lowland areas to move inland. As more people move inland and the population rises at an increasing rate, our population would be more condensed than ever, and our natural resources are quickly depleting. So the solution is to either decrease the population or to improve the environment. But you don’t believe in providing birth control, or that climate change even exists. See how that is ironic? If we go along with your plan, there will be too many people, and not enough resources or land for us to live on.

Being pro-choice doesn’t mean you are pro-abortion. That’s the nice thing about it being a choice -- a very personal choice that every woman should be able to make for herself, not by some man in congress who will never be in that position. You can be pro-choice and not believe in abortion, because you can believe that it is the individual's choice, and what someone else does with their uterus is none of your business! I have a question: How does a woman you don’t know having an abortion affect you? Oh, wait, it doesn’t!

While we're on the topic of abortion, let's talk about full-term abortions! Only 12 percent happen after the 13th week. At this point, the fetus has as much brain activity as a sea slug. It's not until the 24th week that there is viable brain activity. No woman would go through 24 weeks of pregnancy and then be like, “You know what? I don’t think I want this baby.”

Only 1.5 percent of abortions happen after 20 weeks. The reason most abortions after 20 weeks happen is because the mother's life threatened by the pregnancy. As for nine-month abortions, what Trump likes to call “ripping the baby out of the womb,” THEY DON’T EXISIT! First of all, this would literally just be considered birth or a C-section. Second of all, no woman would go through nine months of grueling pregnancy to decide she wants to get an abortion on the last day. It just doesn’t happen!

As for things government shouldn’t have a say in, this brings up my next topic: Being LGBTQIA. Being gay is biological, not a choice. Open any Psychology of Gender and Sexuality textbook and you would know this. Electroshock therapy isn’t a way you should treat homosexuality, because you don’t need to treat homosexuality. Electroshock should only be used in extreme cases of mental disorders, and being LGBTQIA isn’t a mental disorder. It's just a trait that you are born with, like our hair color, or how tall we grow to be. Conversion therapy is ridiculous; you are trying to fix something that is not broken. Conversion therapy can be extremely dangerous. Electroshock therapy can permutably damage someone's brain. I don’t know about you, but I would much rather go to a pride parade then visit someone in a hospital with permanent brain damage.

Lastly, religion can be a beautiful thing, but it doesn’t mix well with politics. You don’t see people going into your church and protesting your religion with politics, so why are you trying to force religion into our politics?! There is a reason church and state should be separated.

I hope this better informs you and that you will know what the hell you are talking about when you are out destroying the environment and the lives of immigrants, people with a different religion, women, members of the LGBTQIA community, and people of a different skin color.

Sincerely,

A girl who is terrified to have you and Donald Trump in the White House.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

There have been many lessons learned.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
