Dear Mark Ruffalo,
I'm a pretty huge fan of your work both on and off screen. I first saw you as Bruce Banner in the Avengers and from there found out about your work with the environment and your activism. You've been such an amazing actor and person since I've come across you work. I'm active follower of your Tumblr and Facebook. It makes my day when I see you post something.
But now we have a problem.
I heard about your new work, "Anything" which is about a trans woman. Great start to put a transgender woman as the center of your new work. Especially a woman who is a sex worker and forms at the very least an intense friendship with a man. You were doing so well.
But I kept reading, curious to see what transgender woman you would cast. Instead of seeing an actor with the actual background, I see that you cast a cisgender man, Matt Bomer.
Not don't get me wrong, I don't have a problem with with Matt Bomer. My problem here is that there are many women who are transgender who could have taken the role that also have experience acting. Jen Richards, for example.
A woman with acting experience who is also trans that applied this role. I'm sure there were many others too, but you still chose a cisgender man to play this. While Matt Bomer is gay, he is not representative of the transgender community.
You've advocated for trans rights and shared articles and moments where the community made huge accomplishments, but this is definitely a step back from all the support you've given to the community.
There are so many other ways you could have continued to support people while giving even more accuracy to a move about a transgender woman. Giving one of the actresses that is actually trans would have been a great start.
This an already oppressed group of people, and they need all the support others will give them. This would be a huge opportunity for someone to step into the limelight and tell her story as well.
I want to hope it was merely a mistake on your part and you see the error of casting Matt Bomer in this role, but please don't try to say it was because it's not about discrimination and just about the love story.
These women deserve to show they get happy endings and love stories too instead of the tragic endings media likes to portray them getting. Be the activist I've seen you be so many times before instead of doing the same as past films and failing transgender women again.
You still have the chance to correct this mistake, or at least admit that you made one.
From,
A Fan Who Had Looked Up To You
