Dear Florida Students,
Our whole nation failed in protecting you and for that, I am so sorry. I am sorry that you had to deal with this horrible horrible event happen to you and your classmates. No child should ever have to experience what happened that day. But I pray that you take this issue and turn it into a powerful movement for our world and make a change.
Because enough is enough
18 shootings around the Country in two months
17 students that you went to school with every day are now gone.
It's time for a change in gun laws, mental health and law enforcement. Why should a 19-year-old be able to legally buy an assault rifle but not be able to buy a drink at the bar? Here's the thing, if a criminal is determined to murder people they will find a way to get a weapon regardless, however raising gun age limits and making sure background checks are always forced will decrease these incidents from happening.
Cruz had these guns legally at such a young age. I also believe his mental illness played a huge role as well. He wasn't noticed and helped. Our FBI needs more funding if they failed and overlooked Mr. Cruz's threatening social media posts and his threatening comments. This problem of our generation needs a change. And I applaud you for becoming advocates for this time of our world and standing up to senators and our president to enforce stricter policies.
But in my opinion, I think it is not okay to want to make teachers conceal and carry in classrooms. We are trying to make gun violence lower then what it is. But if we force our teachers to have to carry guns isn't that going to make gun violence a higher risk? Are they thinking about would teachers go to lengths of taking a life? Of course, they would do anything to protect us but dear god, do we force them to be trained to take another life? Teachers should have a right and a say in this.
Florida students, I am sorry we failed you, I want you to know how strong you guys have been and inspirations for all of us.
