An open letter to little me ~

Dear 10 year old me,

I haven’t seen you in a while. How long has it been? Nine years? Doesn’t feel like it’s been that long. Feels like just yesterday you were running around pretending to be a superhero, wanting to save the world like Spiderman. Spending hours looking up at the clouds floating by without a care in the world. The future was so bright through your eyes. Everything so bright, so full of shining potential. Too bad you don’t realize the sad reality behind that cloud you think looks like a lion riding a skateboard. It’s the same cloud that’s going to blight your happiness in a few years. But I guess that’s not why I’m writing. I’m writing because there’s a few things I need to tell you. Things I wish someone had told me before I fell so deep.

1. Use your voice

You’re going to spend most of your time listening to what other people have to say. It’s not always going to be easy to get your word in. Truth is, as you get older no one is going to call on you if you raise your hand. You’ve got to speak louder about things that matter to you. Nobody can read minds. If you don’t voice what’s on your mind, no one else will speak for you.

2. You are much stronger than you know

There are going to be times when you feel helpless. Like everyone and everything is against you. As if the stars have aligned and decided that you were just going to have a bad day. In times like this you’ve got to remain strong. Keep your mind on the bright future to come. Try not to focus on the dim present. Remember that good things come to those who wait, and whatever doesn’t kill you can only make you stronger.

3. Value your friends

Right now friends might just be those people that you have fun with at school. But as you grow older they will begin to take on a completely different role. They’ll always be the people you have fun with, but they’ll also be the angels who fight the demons attempting to drag you down. They’ll be the light to guide you through the darkness. When you can’t think of one good thing about yourself they’ll be there to remind you of how amazing you are. They’ll become your lifeline, your family. Cherish them because they will be there for you when you can’t be there for yourself.

4. Put yourself out there

Nothing is going to fall into your lap. If you want something you’ve got to go out and get it yourself. People will notice you and your talents, but it’s up to you to get their attention. It might not happen right away, it might not happen anytime soon, but hard work pays off. As long as you put everything into what you love, people will love what you do.

5. Everything is going to turn out just fine.

Take some time to relax. I know that things might get hard, and it might not always be the simplest thing to be happy. Anxiety is going to be your worst enemy, you’re going to worry about anything and everything. But I have a secret; nothing beats anxiety like a little confidence, and you’ve got confidence in droves. You might not realize it right now but you’re, intelligent, talented, funny, and brilliant beyond your comprehension. As long as you can endure your hardships, you’ll bloom into the most radiant flower.

Sincerely,

Your future success

Being a part of any organization undoubtedly comes with the pitfalls of being grouped into negative stereotypes, and sororities are certainly no exception. Here are the top few things, that I find at least, are some of the most irritating misconceptions that find their way into numerous conversations...

8. "The whole philanthropy thing isn't real, right?"

Well all those fundraisers and marketing should would be a waste then wouldn't they?

There are plenty of obstacles that come when taking care of kids, but it's a very rewarding experience.

As a college student, being a nanny over the summer is both enjoyable and challenging. Underneath the seemingly perfect trips to the pool or countless hours spent playing Monopoly are the obstacles that only nannies will understand. Trading in your valuable summer vacation in return for three months spent with a few children less than half your age may seem unappealing, but so many moments make it rewarding. For my fellow summer nannies out there, I know you can relate.

There are a lot of really easy, common names in the U.S. and while many of those simple names have different spellings, most of the time, pronunciation is not an issue that those people need to worry about. However, others are not as fortunate and often times give up on corrections after a while. We usually give an A+ for effort. So, as you could probably imagine, there are a few struggles with having a name that isn’t technically English. Here are just a few…

Daydreaming

day·dream (ˈdāˌdrēm/): a series of pleasant thoughts that distract one's attention from the present.

Daydreams, the savior of our life in class. Every type of student in the classroom does it at least once, but most cases it is an everyday event, especially in that boring class -- you know the one. But what are we thinking while we are daydreaming?

Puerto Ricans. They are very proud people and whether they were born on the island or born in the United States by Puerto Rican parent(s). It gets even better when they meet another fellow Puerto Rican or Latino in general. You’ll know quickly if they are Puerto Rican whether the flag is printed somewhere on their person or whether they tell you or whether the famous phrase “wepa!” is said.
