Dear King

A letter to my black brothers.

Dear King
Nicole Rosenthal

Dear King,

You were always beautiful; I know because you were created with divine fingers. God grasped a handful of stardust from the firmament, and you glowed in His hands against the hollow universe.

When they try to convince you that you are evil, remember how your soul glowed before God's eyes. When they try to convince you that you are ugly, remember you were made in His image. Your spiraled locks mirror the pattern of the universe; your melanated skin is so rich like this precious earth that yields life. When they try to convince you that you will never amount to anything, remember that you were a king before they shamed you.You stand with authority with your broad shoulders carrying the weight of our cries. Royalty is encoded into your DNA, that's why they shudder every time you walk. You were chained so that your will could be broken, hung from trees so that your words could not be spoken, shot by guns so that your history would be forsaken.

But the spirit never forgets.

You bear the scars of your ancestors on your heart. There is no one stronger I know than you. In a world that continuously attempts to destroy your existence, you always find a way to overcome, but I wonder, how much more pain will it take? How many more black lives will be lost until they finally matter? How many more children will have to live without fathers because of a system that is against them? When they look in your eyes, they see danger, but when I look into your eyes I see hurt, pain and frustration. You are not a stereotype. You are not a statistic. You are not a criminal. You are my father, my brother and my friend. My heart thrashes against my chest every time you leave because I don't want you to be another hashtag that will soon be forgotten. It's not enough to be honest, it's not enough to be respectful, it's not enough to have a job or even a degree because killing has become an impulse instead of the ultimate self defense.

I can't handle another video; I can't handle another loss, but I refuse to let their fear consume me; I refuse to let their fear silence me. I will be bold and tell you the words they do not want you to hear. I will remind you of the truth of your existence, and help you rebuild the crown they dismantled. I will remind you how valuable you are until you see the king deep within. I will uplift your brown skin because it is worth more than gold. I will sing songs of our freedom until it becomes reality, but most of all, I will stand by your side and fight for a better tomorrow.

With Love,

Your Fellow Queen

I think the hardest thing about going away to college is figuring out how to become an adult. Leaving a household where your parents took care of literally everything (thanks, Mom!) and suddenly becoming your own boss is overwhelming. I feel like I'm doing a pretty good job of being a grown-up, but once in awhile I do something that really makes me feel like I'm #adulting. Twenty-somethings know what I'm talking about.

I went to a small high school, like 120-people-in-my-graduating-class small. It definitely had some good and some bad, and if you also went to a small high school, I’m sure you’ll relate to the things that I went through.

1. If something happens, everyone knows about it

Who hooked up with whom at the party? Yeah, heard about that an hour after it happened. You failed a test? Sorry, saw on Twitter last period. Facebook fight or, God forbid, real fight? It was on half the class’ Snapchat story half an hour ago. No matter what you do, someone will know about it.

Chandler Bing

I'm assuming that we've all heard of the hit 90's TV series, Friends, right? Who hasn't? Admittedly, I had pretty low expectations when I first started binge watching the show on Netflix, but I quickly became addicted.

Without a doubt, Chandler Bing is the most relatable character, and there isn't an episode where I don't find myself thinking, Yup, Iam definitely the Chandler of my friend group.

Working with the public can be a job, in and of itself. Some people are just plain rude for no reason. But regardless of how your day is going, always having to be in the best of moods, or at least act like it... right?

1. When a customer wants to return a product, hands you the receipt, where is printed "ALL SALES ARE FINAL" in all caps.

2. Just because you might be having a bad day, and you're in a crappy mood, doesn't make it okay for you to yell at me or be rude to me. I'm a person with feelings, just like you.

3. People refusing to be put on hold when a customer is standing right in front of you. Oh, how I wish I could just hang up on you!

RBF, or resting b*tch face, is a serious condition that many people suffer from worldwide. Suffers are often bombarded with daily questions such as "Are you OK?" and "Why are you so mad?" If you have RBF, you've probably had numerous people tell you to "just smile!"
