It’s true what they say—you should never forget where you came from. Although we enter this world as brand new beings, the blood pumping through our veins is the product of a lineage of souls that have already entered this world. Some of our bloodline has already left this life, and other members may still remain. If we’re lucky, we have had the chance to get to know some of them. Many of us have grandparents, and some even have had the chance to breath the same air as our great-grandparents. I was blessed enough to grow up with four incredible grandparents.
Although three have passed away at this point, each one of them have touched my heart with a mark that will never fade for as long as I live. The gifts of wisdom, knowledge, and ambition they have given to me over the course of my life are irreplaceable, and I wish I could embrace every single one of them and tell them how grateful I am to be their granddaughter. Luckily, I still have my dad’s mother, Grandma, to share unforgettable moments with. I may never have the perfect words to express how much she means to me, but in this letter, I will try.
Dear Grandma,
You’re my inspiration. I am in awe of the strength you have obtained over the course of your lifetime, through the countless storms you have endured. You and Grandpa created a big family rooted on tradition, companionship, faith, and a love that is unwavering and impenetrable. Each member of our clan is both valued and cherished by one another, which is all thanks to you. You raised my father and uncles to become the brilliant, heroic, loving, compassionate, and fearless men they turned out to be, and it has and will be carried on for all generations to come.
For as long as I can remember, you and I have shared a sacred bond that is unparalleled to any other relationship I have ever had. You have always loved me so unconditionally, and grant me the pleasure of being able to confide in someone who only wants the best for me, without judgment. Whether I need to vent about the insignificant troubles of my everyday life or the obstacles I endure that really matter, you never hesitate to listen and offer your wonderful advice. More importantly, you understand me in a way that not many others do, so when I do confide in you, you accept all that I express to be worthy and valid. I’m not sure if I’ve ever told you this, but I am so grateful for that and for every moment we spend together.
You’re my idol. Over the course of your life, you have been able to maintain your flawless wit, your passion for reading novel after novel, your opinions, and your style. You light up a room every time you walk in, and it’s plain to see. Somehow, you have managed to make friends everywhere you go, and you’re a leader. People of all ages admire you and look up to you, because you exhibit such a strong, lovable presence that is both welcomed and adored.
I hope that throughout the rest of my life, I am able to draw terrific people into my circle the way that you have always done, and that I have a shot at being as appreciated and respected as you are. You place a strong emphasis on the importance of learning new things everyday, and are constantly teaching me how to covet knowledge the way that you do. I can’t believe that after you had children, you somehow mustered up the motivation to attend college for the first time, just to expand your own intelligence! You are truly a rockstar.
I know that losing your husband and two of your children has absolutely broken your heart, but please don’t give up hope altogether. Life is precious and beautiful, and the world is a better place with you in it. As a family, we love you more than we can put into words, and will be by your side through anything and everything. You are our queen and our leader, and you mean the world to every single one of us. Don’t ever think that you are a burden on anyone, because no part of that is true. I’m the luckiest granddaughter in the whole world, because I have you as both a grandmother and a best friend. Thank you so much for being the magnificent woman that you are, and some day I hope to be just like you.
