Dear Girl Who’s Considering Dating A Guy With A Child,

If you ask any girl today would they date a man that has kids, most of them will look at you as if you are a complete nut-job and that it was absolutely out of the equation. But in the reality if they were in the situation, they probably would feel an entirely different way? I was one of those girls. I vowed never to date a man with a child because of the extra “baggage” that came along with dealing with a child. But I turned out to be completely out of line with my judgmental nature, and I would soon eat my words.

I began dating my boyfriend and I knew he had a child, and I was complete scared of what I had got myself into. What if his son didn’t like me? What if this caused unnecessary drama to my life? What if the baby’s mother and I didn’t get along? These were all of the things that ran through my head, but I went along and started the relationship in spite of my lurking fear.

I couldn’t have been more wrong! I honestly believe this has been the most fun I’ve ever had in a relationship. I feel like I’m a kid again. When we play, I love seeing the smile that comes across his son's face or even when I act as if I’m a cat and do my tickles that he loves so much! Or even the innocent kisses on the cheek that make you feel so loved! I never in a million years saw myself in this position, and yes, it has it stressing points but I wouldn’t trade it for the world.

I hate to be kind of a cheese ball, but I believe my boyfriend is a great dad. And as our relationship has grown stronger, he has learned to balance being a dating parent as well as a present father, which I will tell you is not the easiest thing to do. But he wears both hats amazingly. And girl who is considering dating a guy that has a child, it is one of the most selfless things you will go through. I didn’t say it would be an easy thing, but you always should put the child first and seeing a man with his child and being so active in his child’s life will make him even more attractive. I promise you!

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs.
