Advice on life while preparing for college.

Dear Future College Freshman

If you’re reading this, congratulations! You’re almost a college student. Graduation is right around the corner, and you can almost taste all of the wonderful things that college has to offer, but there are a couple of things that you need to consider before you begin your college journey.

Finish strong.

Before you leave high school, don’t forget to leave your mark. Some people rush through high school, trying to make it out as quickly as possible, without cherishing all of the things that high school has to offer. But, you still have classes to take, so make sure you continue to work hard and finish well! Pay attention in your classes and make the most of your time at the top. Also, remember to cherish the time that you have with your family. They will constantly be there to support you throughout the year, but the chances of them coming to see you while you are in college can be very slim, depending on how far away your school is from your home. Just enjoy every second of it, and finish strong!

Find a good roommate.

If you’re a pretty easy-going person, you might think that the random roommate option is for you. Do not do that. There are plenty of ways to find people who have similar interests and living habits as you, but you have to go out and find them. It can be as simple as getting the RoomSync app or asking around your high school to find people who are planning on attending the same college as you. Nobody wants a messy roommate who is awake until 5 a.m. So, don’t put off finding a roommate. Look into it so that you can have a less stressful freshman year.

Enjoy your summer!

You won’t have a lot of time with your high school friends during the school year while you’re in college. Enjoy every single bit of your summer, because you won’t have much time left with these people, and there’s a pretty good chance that this will be the shortest summer that you have before you enter true adulthood. Do as many crazy, awesome things that you can and make every second of it count!

Get pumped!

There are so many things that you are about to take part in this upcoming year. It is going to be awesome. But in preparation for college, it can be easy to get overwhelmed with planning for school. Do not be overwhelmed or too anxious! Just be excited. This will be such a new and awesome experience. You should be excited!

You are about to embark on a crazy journey. You are going to learn so much about yourself and others, and hopefully, you are still learning stuff in your classes. The experiences you are going to have will last a lifetime. So, just enjoy every bit of it! Remain calm while preparing for college, get excited, but enjoy your last bit of high school life. Before you know it, you’ll know lots about your future school. Good luck! Hope college life is a blast!

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies.
