Dear Future Cadet,
If there's anything you've taught me, it's that life is too short to not strike up a conversation, too short to hold grudges against people you should let go of, and too short not to enjoy every day as if it is your last. You have made all of us so proud of all you have accomplished, and I am more than delighted to call you my brother. You will face many seemingly impossible obstacles at the Air Force Academy, but the only thing that matters is how you overcome them. Set your expectations high, and hold yourself to an even higher standard because only you know what you are capable of achieving.
In every person's life, there are defining moments that mold and shape that individual into who they are. Those moments may be negative or positive, but they have a lasting impact regardless. I remember when you would hop on the plane ride at the mall, or build NASA spaceships with mom at our old house. Maybe that's what shaped your future. I remember when you ran at the last track and field meet during your Sophomore year. You were still in your black boot brace and you limped the entire 100 meters—I'd never in my life heard the crowd cheer so loud. I don't know if on that day you had a feeling that things were looking up, but I sure did. In that moment when you were pumping your arms, striding forward, and giving everything you had, I knew that you could accomplish even the most difficult feat.
So now I would like to impart some of my life experience unto you.
When your sides and lungs ache and you feel like keeling over, steady your breathing and remember that the pain is temporary—there's nothing better than the satisfaction of knowing you completed a challenge and didn't let up even for a minute. Motivate and encourage your fellow cadets who may struggle at times when the going gets tough. All of you are in the same boat, and you all need to learn how to have each other's back. When you are a witness to any derogatory remarks, do not stand idly. And lastly, don't let them break you. Stay strong, compassionate, witty, and true to who you are.
With Much Respect,
Your Sister
