To My Future Daughter

Beautiful girl, you will do amazing things.

To my future daughter,

First of all, know that I love you so much more than anyone else in the world, except for your dad and your heavenly father.

You're a force to be reckoned with. I haven't met you yet, but if you're anything like me, you're going to be a handful. But hey, that's why Momma has two hands.

You're absolutely breathtaking. Just know that not everyone is going to think so, and that's okay. You're beautiful in your own way, just like all the other girls are beautiful in their own way. However, just because someone looks different from you does not give you the right to make fun of them. You'll learn that one day.

Please never date until you're 35. Okay, maybe you can date a little bit earlier than that, but please don't let a stupid boy take advantage of you. Your heart is going to be so exceptionally big and you're going to be full of so much love, people will take that for granted. Don't let them. However, don't build up walls and push people out. Just love, my sweet baby. We love love and we love showing our love. One day, a stupid boy is going to come along and break my little lovebug's heart....then Momma will break his nose. That day will feel like the end of the world, however, it'll be just the beginning, baby girl.

I pray that you know you can come to me with absolutely anything. By the time you're a teenager, I'll seem to be ancient to you. Just know that I was a teenager once so I'll understand what all you're going through. Momma always knows too, so don't try to hide anything from me. I really should be an investigator. Seriously though, I don't care if it's 3 in the afternoon and you're upset about that awful "friend" who was rude in the hallway, or if it's 4 in the morning and you're crying yourself to sleep because some boy talked to you in a way that is way less than you deserve, Momma is here. Come to me, talk to me for hours. Being your mom is my 3rd priority, after being a Godly woman and being a great wife.

I'm writing this as a 19 year old, and I've already been praying for you and about you for years. Pray daily and often during the day. Jesus knows every detail about you since you were in the womb. Love him with everything you have, and he'll love you right back.

Baby girl, I cannot wait to meet you some day. You're going to be the most beautiful girl I've ever laid eyes on. You will be intelligent, hilarious, sassy (I mean, of course, because I'm your mom), silly, caring, compassionate, and so so so many other wonderful things. You will change the world. I can't wait to see everything you do and what you amount to. No one is perfect, but you'll come pretty darn close.

With all the love in the world,

Your momma.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
