Dear Best Friends,

I just want you to know how much you mean to me.

Dear Best Friends,
Cup of Crazy

The other day, the three of us were sitting in Starbucks, just chilling. One of you looked over and caught me staring. You asked why the heck I was looking at you. I lied and said I was just thinking and got lost in thought. I was thinking, but I was not lost in thought. I was just thinking of how lucky I am to have both of you.

You two are so different from each other, but you both are so amazing. And I don’t think people are amazing very often. But there is just such unique personality with you guys, and I hope you know that.

Brandi, I love how determined you are to help other people. You could be having the worst day of your life, and if someone tells you about a minor inconvenience, you are there to help. You care so much about other people, and I really respect that.

You also have such an eternal perspective, which is inspiring. I typically live day-to-day, or week-by-week if it’s journalism related. But the things you do, you always look at it in a “this is going to do something good” attitude. Even if it’s something minor, you always believe good things will come eventually. I can’t tell you how many times I have heard about you doing something for someone else and you saying results will come when the time is right. It’s truly amazing.

Critter, I love that you and I are very similar but very different at the same time. You are so understanding of who I am as a person. Not only do you understand that I’m busy very often because we are the same major, but you understand what I need and when I need it. You get that sometimes I just do not want to hang out or that I’m feeling crappy because I just am. You are understanding because you have felt the same way before, but you are also understanding even if you can’t relate to why I feel the way I do, and I greatly appreciate that.

But we also have different interests, and that’s cool. We have different tastes in music and fashion and books we like to read. I don’t enjoy watching gamers on youtube, and I don’t think you’d ever ride a longboard. Somehow we are very different and just get along really well and enjoy our time together, at least I hope.

Both of you are awesome in the way that you just accept me. You have never tried to change me, even the not-so-great parts of me. You let me do my own things, and you both do your own things, and it just works.

We all understand that we are all busy or have our own lives. And we all understand that we are all unique and have our own likes and dislikes. I wouldn’t ask Critter to go to a concert with me because she doesn’t like my music. I wouldn’t ask Brandi to come to a press conference because I know she would get bored.

So this was just my letter to both of you. I wanted to say I really appreciate both of you. For being completely yourselves and letting me be true to who I am. For not judging me. For just understanding. You mean the world to me.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies.
