Dear Freshman

Don't have it all planned out

Dear Freshman

Dear freshman. Welcome to college. I'm sure everything is very new to you and every aspect of your life is new and exciting but also a little nerve racking. You are meeting new people, making new friends, starting to see life a little differently than you probably ever have before. You're basically living with a stranger and eating food you might not even like that much. You're starting to get a feel for just how college works and you're finally becoming independent. I'm sure so many people have given you so many pieces of advice on how to act or how to work and study best. But here is just a little advice from someone who was just in your shoes two years ago.

First just be your self. Don't do anything that makes you feel really uncomfortable. Yes, try new things and get involved on your college campus but don't do something just because all of your new friends are doing it. Whatever you do be smart about it and make sure it is something you truly want to do.

Second the work load now is nothing like it will be soon. I remember my friend came up to me about five weeks into freshman year and said "man I'm a bio major and I thought this was going to be hard but I've had almost no work so far!" He did later come to regret this statement. The work load first semester is usually pretty light aside from one or two major papers and a group presentation. College professors understand that you are still in the process of making the change from high school to college and want to help you by not giving you an incredible amount of work. Just know that this will change soon enough and the work load and stress will come.

My third and final piece of advice is don't plan your life out. Let things happen and fall into place as they will. When I started college I thought I knew the girl I was going to marry and I thought I was going to be a bio major who became a athletic therapist. Before first semester freshman year was even over I wasn't even with that girl anymore and I was no longer a bio major and had no idea what I even wanted to major in.

Life is an adventure so just live it and know that everything happens for a reason. Work hard and have fun, make friends that will last a life time and remember you are not defined by your grades.

Best of luck!

In honor of Mother’s Day, I have been thinking of all the things my mom does for my family and me. Although I couldn’t write nearly all of them, here are a few things that moms do for us.

They find that shirt that’s right in front of you, but just you can’t seem to find.

10 Reasons To Thank Your Best Friend

Take the time to thank that one friend in your life you will never let go of.

Thank You on wooden blocks

1. Thank you for being the one I can always count on to be honest.

A true friend will tell you if the shirt is ugly, or at least ask to borrow it and "accidentally" burn it.

2. Thank you for accepting me for who I am.

A best friend will love you regardless of the stale french fries you left on the floor of your car, or when you had lice in 8th grade and no one wanted to talk to you.

Everybody gets sick once in a while, but getting sick while in college is the absolute worst. You're away from home and your mom who can take care of you and all you really want to do is just be in your own bed. You feel like you will have never-ending classwork to catch up on if you miss class, so you end up going sick and then it just takes longer to get better. Being sick in college is really tough and definitely not a fun experience. Here are the 15 stages that everyone ends up going through when they are sick at college.

Do as I say, not as I do.

Your eyes widen in horror as you stare at your phone. Beads of sweat begin to saturate your palm as your fingers tremble in fear. The illuminated screen reads, "Missed Call: Mom."

Growing up with strict parents, you learn that a few things go unsaid. Manners are everything. Never talk back. Do as you're told without question. Most importantly, you develop a system and catch on to these quirks that strict parents have so that you can play their game and do what you want.

"Friends" maybe didn’t have everything right or realistic all the time, but they did have enough episodes to create countless reaction GIFs and enough awesomeness to create, well, the legacy they did. Something else that is timeless, a little rough, but memorable? Living away from the comforts of home. Whether you have an apartment, a dorm, your first house, or some sort of residence that is not the house you grew up in, I’m sure you can relate to most of these!
