Dear College Freshman,

Well, believe it or not, your life is going to significantly change in a little over a month, maybe even sooner. You are going to College! I bet you thought this time would never come. It is quickly approaching and I am sure you are so very anxious. I know I was too. All you have ever known was living at home, having home cooked meals by mom, living just a hop, skip and a jump away from your best friends and so much more. In a short period of time, a lot of that is going to change. You will not be living at home or sleeping in your own bed. The home cooked meals will go away for a while and some of your greatest friends will be going across the country to attend school. As you can see, this will take some adjusting. But do not worry, everything will end up just fine!

The day I left for college was definitely one I can perfectly remember. The uneasy, nervous stomach filled with butterflies, the excitement I had when decorating my new home and calling it my own. All of this was so new, and it was so fun. All I can really say is that, you never really know you are ready to go away until it is actually happening. I had my mind set that I was ready to be on my own away from my family and friends. I was also convinced that I would not cry when saying goodbye to my family and friends. I am telling you now, it will happen. Do not fight the tears, just let it happen. It is a bittersweet cry, and it will feel a little weird leaving all you have ever known for 18 years, but it is all worth it. I must say, I have come a long way from the day I said my goodbyes. Looking back, I would never change a thing. Now, as college sophomore I can finally say that freshman year was one I will never forget.

Anyways, at this point you probably have everything figured out. From your roommate to the color of your sheets. That is all the fun stuff. Save all your 20-percent-off coupons from Bed Bath & Beyond and you will be set! Make sure you have everything good to go for the time move in day rolls around. It will come up quicker than you think! Do not forget the little things too! Decorate your room with items from home, to make it feel more cozy and comfortable. Print tons of pictures to hang or frame. Make this new home just like your real home.

Lastly — and I cannot stress this enough — take advantage of the time you have left here at home. This is going to be a time in your life where everything is going to change. It is all up to you how you make it. Spend time with your friends and family. Go to all your favorite restaurants and maybe ask mom to cook some of your favorite meals, she will sure love that. After all, there will be one less spot at the dinner table now! With freshman year being over, it makes being home so special. You learn to appreciate the little things like your own bed and the amazing shower pressure in a private bathroom! It really is all about the little things in life.

They matter the most.

Sincerely,

Devyn, soon-to-be college sophomore

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
