Why Kindness Is Everything

We have the power to make change.

Why Kindness Is Everything

Dear Everyone,

I'm not going to lie to you all, I was going to write an article this week entirely about dogs, but in light of some recent events and some recent realizations I decided to go in a different direction (don't worry the dog article is still coming). On June 12th 2016 one of the deadliest mass shootings in America took place. 49 lives were taken, and countless others were altered forever. This heartbreaking tragedy occurred due to the deep-seeded hatred embedded in one individual. A hatred of himself, and the people around him.

It disheartens me that someone could live everyday with that much hate in their heart. No one may truly ever know the reasons for why he did what he did, but what we do know for sure is that each person in that club that night had a life, a family, opportunities to do better for themselves and he took that from them.

I remember the word hate and dislike always being very sour words in my mouth, when I was younger I tried really hard to dislike someone, but every time I thought I did I would learn something about them or they would do something that caused me to change my mind. I remember the feeling of relief I felt when I didn't hate them anymore.

Hatred is exhausting let me tell you. I'm not saying you should never be angry, of course be angry, be sad, be happy feel what you need to feel but don't let hatred consume you, because once it does you aren't you anymore you become someone else.

Cruelty is something that is eminent all over the world, and it is a fact that a lot of people wish to ignore. My hope for the world is that humanity is not reflective of the tragedies that occurred that fateful day, or the tragedies that occur everyday all over the world. I don't think that every person in the world will be nice to each other one day, that would be amazing but unfortunately unrealistic.

What I hope for is simple, I hope we begin to take pride in the small kindnesses we perform instead of the hurtful things we may do or say. I hope when we don't like someone it's because of who they are character wise not who they love. I hope we all begin to live with more love in hearts than hate.

A love of life, all it has to offer, and all the people in it. A lot of people say people are inherently good the world is what makes them bad. I disagree with that, I believe the world is an inherently good place, we as people are the ones that mess it up.

But that being said, we as people have the power to change it. It' a scientifically proven fact that change is possible and inevitable. Whether that change be good or bad is up to us. So I challenge all of you to live your lives with kindness, with appreciation, with love, and with respect, and maybe a better world will lie ahead.

Love, Sumi

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
