To my surprise when I got on Facebook a few days ago my old high school had made the news.
So I clicked on the link thinking it was about sports or a new teacher or a new class they offer, but what I read was nothing of the sorts. They are starting to charge, and yes I mean charge money, to students for being tardy and for detentions.
They say as a way to take "ownership" for one's actions.
Well I'm calling a whole bunch of bullshit on that.
I spent my four years of high school at Concordia Lutheran High School, and just about every year the price for the school went up. By the time I graduated the price was in the mid thousands getting closer to 10k. Also we had to buy uniform clothes, which still rings true today, and of course the only place to by them was through the school. I know for some students there they didn't have to pay for all or any tuition for qualifying for vouchers or other scholarship programs, but for my brothers and I, we had to pay the actual price.
To be fair we got a small discount for belonging to "the right" church but that's about it.
With all of this being said I am extremely puzzled on how in anyway shape or form this new "program" teaches students ownership skills. All this does is cost the parents more money considering how the majority of the students will probably turn to mom and dad for the payout.
This also is a way to punish kids who are late from a variety of things, over-sleeping because they had too much homework or they got off work late or they had a late practice or game. I know for me, my junior and senior years I was late to first period a lot, not because I was lazy or irresponsible, but because I had morning practice, and in the winter, my car taking forever to start played a factor too.
There are also students there that don't have the best home life, so maybe they had way more to deal with that morning than they had planned on.
The board members at Concordia could never even dream of this.
So to the students and parents having to deal with this, I feel for you and I'm right there with you in disagreement of it all.
To the board members, principal, or pastors that came with this grand idea; this doesn't teach students anything about ownership. All this does is give students, parents, and people on the outside looking in the impression that this Christian school is just a money hungry place looking to squeeze as much money out of families as possible
Shame on you.
