Classes, clubs, work, significant others, homework, friends, job/internship applications…The list of things to do is never-ending. On top of all of these things that we fill our days with, somehow we are expected to eat, stay healthy, and maybe sleep. As a college student, we put some of those last things on the back burner.

You may think, “I’m in college. I’m supposed to be going crazy and staying up all night and eating junk food. Isn’t that what college students do?”

Not really. Believe it or not, there are ways to somewhat control the craziness and balance out your life. The little things can add up and make a huge difference on your schedule and your well-being this semester.

Keep a Planner

There’s something therapeutic about writing out lists of to-dos and keeping everything organized in one spot. By writing out plans and obligations, you can spread out your priorities throughout the week and then take them on, one day at a time.

Take Time for Yoga or a Run

Do you have a free hour or two at least once in your week? It doesn’t take long to take some time for your body. Late nights and unhealthy eating habits can wreak havoc on your body. By spending just little bit of time in a calming yoga practice or running for even just a half an hour, you can make a huge difference on your body and on your mind. Endorphins and meditation can rejuvenate and power up your entire being.

Cut Out Distractions

Distractions can cause us to work on our homework longer and stay up later. As sad as it is, doing your homework with Netflix on in the background may not be the smartest idea. Same goes for doing homework with a large group of friends. If you have an important or time-consuming assignment that is due soon, it may be best to work alone with just some music and maybe tea. You’ll be more focused and you’ll finish your homework sooner.

Keep a Well-Stocked and Healthy Fridge

Cookies, chips, and processed foods can be quick and tempting when grocery shopping in college, but they are not what is best for you. Fruits, vegetables, and fresh foods can make for quick meals and snacks too, if you prepare them right. By taking out the distractions of unhealthy foods, you will always go for the right choices. Fruits and vegetables don’t have to be boring. Pinterest is filled with great ideas to make healthy foods exciting and tasty. Prepare snacks and meals ahead of time to ensure that you are eating regularly throughout your busy days.

Smile and Stay Positive

A good attitude about everything will make a world of difference when taking on your tasks. When life makes you mad and it seems like everything is just piling up, take time to think of what things are going right for you. Take time to think of what good things will happen when you do what you need to do. Think of the good things that have brought you to where you are right now. By staying thankful about moments of your day, you can transform your entire self. A positive mind can lead to an energized person and can power you to accomplish anything.

New year, new semester, not the same old thing. This semester will be a semester to redeem all the mistakes made in the previous five months.

1. I will wake up (sorta) on time for class.

Let's face it, last semester you woke up with enough time to brush your teeth and get to class and even then you were about 10 minutes late and rollin' in with some pretty unfortunate bed head. This semester we will set our alarms, wake up with time to get ready, and get to class on time!

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.
