Dear Bubba,

Thank you for making me, me.

Dear Bubba,
Megan Dukes

Dear Bubba,

We normally hate each other, but I mean what else are siblings for?

You taught me so much growing up.

You taught me that if a boy ever hurts me I didn't have to worry because you would be right there to handle it.

You taught me what it is like to have fun without realizing the inevitable trouble we would be in later.

You taught me how to love unconditionally because I loved you even when you were beating me up.

You taught me what it is like to have a guardian angel on Earth because whenever I really need you, you were always there.

You taught me that it not okay to chase liquor.

You taught me to know my limits when it came to drinking, and never pass them.

You taught me how to fight.

You taught me how to have a voice, mostly screaming Mom or Dad when you were being mean.

You taught me how to make the bombest pancakes in the world, even though they don't come lose in comparison to yours.

You taught me to always be fully dressed while making bacon, or I will have a nasty scar on my chest. (Who makes bacon shirtless???)

You taught me how to ride a dirtbike, even though I probably couldn't today.

You taught what being stubborn is, because boy, you are more stubborn than a mule.

But more than anything, Bubba, you have taught me to be me. Growing up with you conditioned me to be the strong person I am today. If I didn't fear to live in the shadow of my older brother, I would never be so willing to speak up today. I wouldn't have my dumb dry sense of humor if it wasn't for you making me sit and watch Monty Python and The Holy Grail on repeat. We always fight and bicker, but I know at the end of the day if I needed someone, you would be the first one there. I am sorry for all of the pain I put you through growing up when I would cry wolf because we were arguing and I was afraid to fight you. I am sorry that you had to go through so many things alone growing up because I was too blind to realize it. Thank you for keeping me blind Bubba, and never ruining my childhood by having to grow up too fast like you had to. I will always be the little baby sister that you had. I will always be the head you used to rub and kiss. I will always be your baby sister. Mom recently told me how you would be willing to help me pay for school, even when you do not have the money to give up yourself. You are trying to improve your future and the first person you want to help when you get that money is me. I do not know how to thank you enough. I love you so much. I could never in a million years pay you back for everything you have taught me and have done for me. Granted you can be the biggest ass sometimes, but I know you mean well. Thank you, Bubba for making me, me.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
