As a sports focused major, nothing is more annoying than guys asking why I chose it, after all, I am a female. They ask questions trying to figure out if I actually do know anything about sports or if I am just working towards a major in the field for male attention. News Flash: I am not, I happen to know a lot about the sports I care about so go ahead and quiz me.
I did not choose the one day work in the sports journalism field to impress you, I chose it because it is something I enjoy. Sitting and watching my favorite teams win on any given day makes me happier than my favorite pizza ever can, which says a lot. Sure, I don't know much about basketball or golf, but that is because I do not like either of those sports. There are many reasons why I chose to attend a D1 school and their sports were definitely a factor.
Nothing makes me more irritated than a guy thinking I can not write a good, maybe even better sports article than he can, just because of my gender. Yes, a lot of girls do not enjoy sports, or they pretend to enjoy them to impress guys, but I am not one of them. I can tell you how many points a touchdown is, by the way, it is 6 and then an extra point following it. I can tell you how NCAA penalties differ from NFL penalties, I can tell you what the NHL stands for, what the MLB stands for, and what the NBA stands for. I can tell you what a power play is, what a penalty kill is, and what a shoot out is.
As a girl who played sports all throughout grade school, it is quite annoying when boys ask me why I am into sports. Playing them all of my life, it is hard to not follow professional sports now that I no longer play. The excitement when your favorite hockey player scores the game-winning goal is as thrilling as it gets. Being in the crowd when your team performs an upset against their rival team and hearing everyone goes crazy is a sound like no other. Watching your team win a championship gives me a major adrenaline rush.
So boys, no, I am not devoting the rest of my life and career to try and impress you. I am actually doing it because it makes me happier than most other things do. After all, they say do what you love and love what you do.
