So here's to you, and here's to me, big and little, we'll always be.

Dear Big, I Promise You

You read so many articles on what a big promises her little, and while all of that is so important, littles can be just as good to their big. A big is supposed to be a mentor to their little, someone they can look up too. Aside from that, littles can be an amazing support system and friend to their big.

That being said, there are some things I want to promise my big. I want my big to know that I’ll be there. Whether it be a bad day, a long night, a breakup, or a bad grade on a test, I will be there. If you need a shoulder to cry on, I’m your girl. If you need to binge eat ice cream on the couch, I’m your girl. If you need a long day of Netflix and girl talk, I’m your girl.

I promise to listen when you've had a bad day, and I promise to lend advice to the best of my ability. I know that I’m younger than you are, and I might just be starting to figure this college thing out, but I can always make time to be your friend. I want you to know that no matter what is happening in my own life, you can come to me. I promise to be the best version of myself when you need me. I promise to remind you who you truly are, if and when you start to lose yourself.

I promise that I’ll answer the phone when you call, and I promise to send you the most horribly embarrassing Snapchats when you need something to cheer you up. I promise to listen to your rants, whether they are about boys or that one horrible professor. If you’re questioning your major, I want to be someone that you can call. When things get hard, I promise to give you pep talks. When you ace that super hard midterm, I promise to be your biggest fan and celebrate with you.

I promise to be by your side on your worst day, and I promise to laugh with you on your best day. I promise to surprise you with cheesy gifts when your sad. I promise to call you at midnight on your birthday. I promise to deliver coffee when your spending the Sunday night before the test cramming. I promise to always keep things fun and as interesting as possible.

You’re a mentor to me, and I promise to always be grateful for that. I’m sure I’ll get annoying with my constant questions, but I hope you know that I always appreciate your advice. It's comforting to have someone to turn to in a place that's new and far from home.

While we might still be getting to know each other, I see a great friendship in our future. After all, everything happens for a reason, and I think that you were meant to be my big. We’re going to be a great duo, and I promise to be your partner in crime. I promise that I’ll embarrass you as much as I possibly can, and we’ll laugh for weeks about it. I promise to laugh at your jokes, even when they aren’t funny.

You’re my big, and you can always find a friend in me. I’m so grateful for the mentor that you are and that you will continue to be for years to come. So here’s to the memories, and here’s to you and me, big and little we'll always be.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
