In case you have been living under a rock, Beyonce, along with Bruno Mars performed at the Super Bowl 50 halftime show and made me regret buying Coldplay albums when I was in middle school. (On a side note: I would have acknowledged the Coldplay performance if the mashup included one of my favorite songs "A Message.")
While most of the general public think that Beyonce slayed the performance of "Formation," a few people seem to think the performance “was promoting an un-American agenda.” While I'm not as funny and smart as Jessica Williams, I am going to try my best and list a couple of the reasons why the Beyonce's performance is American as football.
1. Pro-Black is not Anti-White or Police
For people that feel scared because Beyonce paid homage to the Black Panthers and Micheal Jackson, you shouldn’t. She was honoring her culture, which often times is ignored by mainstream America. By her bringing black culture to the forefront, she’s sending the message that Blacks are just as important as Whites to American culture and history.
2. Race is an American Issue
According to former New York mayor Rudy Giuliani, “the super bowl performances should talk to the people in Middle America.” This implies that race isn’t an issue for many Americans, which is untrue because everyone has a race. In a country where many Blacks are disenfranchised due to police brutality, a lack of economic and social mobility due to poor education and job programs and unlivable living conditions (just look at what is going on in Flint), race is an issue. Race has its place in football when most of the players on the field are Black.
3. Female Empowerment
Beyonce single handedly out shined everyone she was on stage with, showing that women don't need men in order to prove their self-worth and importance as human beings.
4. Most People Watched the Super Bowl for this Performance.
Everyone should just admit it, they don't really care who won because Queen Bey dominated. I'm a moderate Beyonce lover and I'm bowing down, so that's why she doesn't even have to respond to the haters.
