Dear America, How Could You?

An open letter to my country.

Dear America,

How could you?

How could you elect Donald Trump as leader of the free world?

Don't get me wrong... I’m happy more Americans voted in this election than ever before. I’m glad people utilized this personal power many people died protecting. However, I’m disappointed. Now, our country heads into uncharted territory all because many of you are angry with the political system.

Yet, I don’t blame you. I'm angry, too.

I'm angry our country obsesses with money, and it controls almost everything we do. America sacrifices qualities of life such as affordable medical care and healthy, chemical-free food all because companies controlling these things want to maximize profits, spend less money, or stamp out the competition.

I'm angry women don’t earn the same wage as men for doing the same work.

I'm angry Americans now owe over $1 trillion in student debt.

I’m angry with the way this country treats minorities, in private and public.

Though so much anger brooded in our country over the past decade, how could you vote for Donald Trump? Aren't we better than that? How do we explain to children and the future generations we elected a whiny, angry liar who inspires hate and treats women with such disrespect as the face of our nation?

By voting for Trump, you sent a loud message.

You told women their rights don’t matter. You told sexual offenders their behavior is acceptable because we have a president accused of rape. You told minorities (which Trump repeatedly aggressed) they don’t have a legitimate stake in our country. You told members of the LGBTQ+ community you don’t care about their safety and well-being. You legitimized the hatred and bigotry running deep in our country.

[You also declared loudly to the earth its health doesn’t matter because we all know Donald Trump believes climate change is "a hoax created by the Chinese”.]

Many of you hid behind “biblical principles” in making this decision. In my opinion, Donald Trump is the anti-thesis of anything from God’s word. Jesus healed the blind, fed the hungry, and calmed the storm. Jesus said, "Love thy neighbor as thyself." Jesus said, "Blessed are the meek." Can anyone honestly characterize Trump (a man who said vile things about minorities, women, and the disabled) as altruistic or meek?

America, what happened?

What happened to “give me your tired, your poor, huddled masses yearning to breathe free”? What happened to “we the people of the UNITED States”? What happened to “crown thy good with brotherhood from sea to shining sea”? This divided nation is not what I know as America.

In the end, we must recognize the results of this election. Donald Trump will be the 45th president of the United States of America.

I will pray for Donald Trump, and I hope his presidency isn’t some chaos-ridden fluke.

Like Hillary Clinton said in her concession speech, we owe Trump an open mind and the chance to lead, and we will cherish the peaceful transfer of power (for the country’s sake). So with a heavy heart, I accept these election results because I love my country more than myself.

Sorority
Rebekah Lee

I remember my freshman year oh so well. I remember feeling terrified the night before orientation. The one thing that I dreaded the most was not the new people, the new environment, or even the academic pressure. I was dreading having to talk to sorority girls about Recruitment. I remember cutting off and avoiding any Rho Gamma/Panhellenic Officer that came my way during First Week. I looked at them like they had asked me to cut my arm off whenever they asked me if I wanted to rush. To be honest, I did not even know what rush was, but I knew that I did NOT want to be a part of it. To me, it was dumb. It was a waste of money. It was a waste of my time.

And guess what? I did not rush my freshman year. I spent the first half of my freshman year isolating myself from everyone on campus. I spent all of my time in the library, and then (since I was a commuter) went back home once my work was finished.

Tiana would no doubt be disappointed in the food our cafeteria has to offer.

And hopefully she would cook for everyone in her dorm.

She definitley would not take any 8:00 am classes because she would be up late baking and cleaning up the communal kitchen that are available in every dorm.
