Dear America,
I fell in love with you when I was only 14 and I knew, I knew you were asking me to stay with you and follow my dreams. I’ve been here for a year now and I just realized that you lied to me.
Well, America, you promised me a land of freedom and respect, honesty and unity, opportunities and dreams.
But you gave me a land where opinions should be locked in a closet together with sexual orientation. A land where being of my color is synonymous with being a criminal. A land where I don’t know who I should trust because even the media, the means of communication that should be on our side and tell the truth and nothing but the truth, shares only what will give them more audience or just one side of the story (the side that will give them more money).
You gave me a land where you only survive if you know your life around the system. A land where people think about building walls and banning others of my color. A land where I am afraid of going to the mall or even church because somebody might shoot me for no reason.
Don't get me wrong America, you're truly a land of opportunities and I've learned so much with you and about you. You are my second home and I appreciate the chance that you gave me to come here as a student to learn more about you and follow my dreams. And I've met a lot of amazing people along the way, but lately, America, you have been disappointing me more and more.
You've taken a religion and shattered it, making everybody afraid of those who are part of that religion. You took races and ethnicities and you made them feel inferior to yours. And you are trying to elect a man that like Voldemort, wants you to be ruled only by “pure bloods,” wants to destroy all the mud bloods and build a wall around muggles because he wants to make America "great again.” You disappointed me when you saw people with power being racist towards my continent and my people, and you did nothing but applaud. You saw people being raped and you did nothing but apologize to the rapist for “destroying" his career. You disappointed me when you didn't do anything when people were being killed for being who they were.
Don't get me wrong, America, I love you, I just wish you were what you promised me you'd be. Just remember that a wise man once said, “Returning violence for violence multiplies violence, adding a deeper darkness to a night already devoid of stars. Darkness cannot drive out darkness only love can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate: only love can do that” (Martin Luther King Jr). So America, please love more and hate less, smile more and judge less, look beyond the social barriers and skin colour, cultivate peace and show me the America I fell in love with when I was 14. I love you, America, but how long will it take for you to see what is happening and do something about it? Please don't hate me.
From yours truly:
The girl from the unknown paradise.
