When people say that our country has a "gun problem", I just shake my head and nod. I'm not one to argue on certain issues that may be sensitive to others. However, in this case, I have something to say and I am blessed with a medium, such as Odyssey, in which I can say it.
I will admit that our country does have a gun problem, but it is not THE problem. Taking away guns will not solve this recurring issue of children being shot by just simply attending school. In addition, making it more difficult to buy guns legally is not going to solve this issue in our country. Arming teachers in schools won't take care of the problem either. Neither will the increase of law enforcement with guns in the schools.
None of these things will solve the problem of the trend of school shootings in America. I'm not saying that I don't agree with these tactics. I actually do. However, I don't think that any one of these ideas will cure the disease our country has developed in that past year.
I know my opinion may not be widely accepted, but hear me out:
We don't have a gun problem. We have a culture problem.
In the past twenty years, it has become more common for people to just die. Not pass away, enter the gates of Heaven, pass on, lay to rest, or anything of a larger caliber. People just die, and no one seems to think twice about it.
The value of life in this country is becoming more and more non-existent. Think about it, you see people get shot and killed in movies and don't even think twice about what that would be like in real life because it's a movie. But let's not forget, dying is a real thing. It's not fictional.
Let's talk about video games. It is only in the last 15-20 years that going on a killing spree in your game-room became a hobby. I'm not saying that video games are the reason kids are bringing guns to school and killing their classmates. It's not that simple. However, I feel that violent video games and movies are teaching children that people getting shot and killed is normal and not a life-changing event.
Because of this culture swallowing our society, people dying left and right is just part of living in the United States. It shouldn't be that way.
So yes, parents should lock up their guns. And yes, gun control is necessary. These things are true.
In addition, as a country, we need to double check our culture as well. Because seeing innocent children getting shot in killed seems all too familiar. I don't want a school shooting to be just another Tuesday in the schools of America.
