As an Exercise science major, I am equipped with information that explains how physical activity effects our bodies, aging, and diseases. After learning the numerous benefits exercise has on us and the process of aging, I feel the need to work out quite regularly. Obviously, my major also promotes nutrition, and what kinds of food can help regain energy and strength post exercise. The wealth of knowledge my major has in stored in me, has led me to attempt to lead a healthy lifestyle. It has also given me a passion for exercise that the majority of the U.S. does not possess.
The health in our country is largely based off the foods we produce. And while this is an issue that will continue to plague the U.S., I have decided to discuss a different problem. Another reason why Americans are obese or overweight has to do with a term I like to call, “gymbarressment.” This term refers to the fear or lack of knowledge many Americans have when it comes to the gym. Many non-gymgoers feel that gyms are littered with fit individuals who will criticize people who don’t know where to start. And although I cannot deny that every gym has a few individuals who are full of it, I wish to put this fear to rest.
The truth is, the gym can be intimidating. You enter a space full of equipment, weights, and men and women busting with muscles. Yet, at the same time are attempting to focus on yourself. So to new gymgoers, it may be difficult to take the first step (on the treadmill) or the first squat without feeling scrutiny. This is a feeling that I can sympathize with. However, because I have knowledge behind me, I can take the intimidation with a grain of salt, and proceed to my workout. Yet, others who come with “gymbarressment,” may not proceed. This is upsetting to me, because I know how important exercise is to the human body. And I feel that a fear so insignificant shouldn’t stop unhealthy individuals improve their lifestyle.
What I want newbies to know is that everyone in the gym was once a beginner. And that the muscles that intimidate you, had to be earned. This means that you shouldn’t feel embarrassed if you are just beginning to earn your own! Also not everyone who attends the gym is a fit Barbie who will look down on you. Most of us are just regular people who are trying to better ourselves. And if anyone does try to make you feel like an amateur, just use it to make your workouts better and more consistent! After all, exercise is too important to let fear or a few know-it-alls get in the way!
