Anxiety is something that roughly three million Americans suffer with on a daily basis. It can be debilitating, all-consuming, and torturous to those who carry its burden. As someone who personally suffers from anxiety, I know just how hard it is to recognize and cope with having this problem. Here are the stages of dealing with anxiety, as told by Law & Order character Olivia Benson.
1. Denying its existence
The first stage that most people suffering from anxiety go through is denial. Not admitting the feelings that are weighing you down only contributes to the levels of anxiety you feel. It's hard to confront problems in your life, but overcoming this denial is crucial when trying to help combat crippling anxiety.
2. Recognizing the problem
Recognizing that your anxiety is a problem is obviously very important. Like my aunt always says, "You can't fix a problem that you won't acknowledge." It isn't your fault that you suffer with anxiety, and you do not need to be ashamed. You do not have to live with this anxiety; it can be helped.
3. Reaching out for help
Getting help from family, friends, and maybe even doctors is a significant part of dealing with anxiety. Going through things alone isn't easy; we all need somebody to lean on at times. Even if you just need a hug, it is important to allow those close to you to help. Remember, seeking help is not a sign of weakness. In fact, it shows extreme strength.
4. Standing up to your demons
Don't be afraid of your anxiety; it cannot destroy or control you against your will. Finding out what triggers your anxiety is a big part of this stage, as it makes it easier to deal with. Once you realize what's affecting you, you can control it to the best of your ability.
5. Facing daily battles head-on
Like Olivia says, "you're a fighter." Don't let anything discourage you from fighting your anxiety head-on, and don't let anyone invalidate your feelings. The pain and tribulations are real; the best thing you can do is keep fighting each day for a happier life. Don't ever give up on your happiness.
6. Coping with bad days
Not every day is going to be easy. Some days will drag you right back down. Coping with bad days is a part of coping with the anxiety itself. Despite how hard you work, there will always be moments when you feel like you are going backwards. On those days, fight a little harder, and remember, this too shall pass.
7. Taking back control of your life
The best feeling in the world will be when you can finally brush your anxiety off without a care. Ultimately, that may take quite some time, but your day will come. Anxiety can be crippling and agonizing, but with proper care, it can be subsided. Being able to recognize, control, and cope with your anxiety makes you the boss. You are in the driver's seat, and it's up to you to make the best of each day and fight the daily fight as best as you can with a smile on your face. Take back control of your life, and never let your anxiety control you again.
