When I was a Junior in High School, my favorite teacher introduced our English III class to "Dead Poets Society." So, many tears later, I referred to it as my favorite movie. I honestly couldn't tell you what it was about it, but everything said in it sure went straight to my heart. The movie itself, and Robin Williams, just have a way with words, that leaves you truly inspired after watching it. After all, it did inspire me enough to have an article topic for this week. So, if you haven't watched it, I recommend everyone to do so. If not, here are a few of my favorite quotes that should help you through a tough day. Who knows? Maybe even a little inspiration will come.
1. "No matter what anyone tells you, words and ideas can change the world."
2. "...But poetry, beauty, romance, love — these are what we stay alive for."
3. I always thought that the idea of education was to learn to think for yourself."
4. "You must strive to find your own voice, because the longer you wait to begin, the less likely you are to find it at all."
5. "You must trust that your beliefs are unique, your own, even if others think them odd or unpopular."
6. "There is a time for daring, and there is a time for caution. A wise man understands which is called for."
7. "I went into the woods because I wanted to live deliberately ... to put to rout all that was not life; and not, when I came to die, discover that I had not lived."
8. "Seize the day, boys. Make your lives extraordinary."
9."...That the powerful play goes on, and you may contribute a verse. What will your verse be?"
Maybe I feel so connected to this movie because writing is what I'd like to call "my purpose." For some reason, whenever I'm feeling discouraged, or uninspired in my writing, I can think back on that day in Mrs. Sturgeon's English III class, and remember just how eager each one of us sitting in that class were. I can remember that although I may be feeling uninspired in that particular moment, the toy inspiration will soon come– even if it is taking longer than expected.
Long story short: this movie is absolutely brilliant. If you don't think so, then you are, of course, entitled to your wrong opinion.
Carpe Diem.
