In recent movie news, Warner Bros. hires director, Rick Famuyiwa, to helm "The Flash" after Seth Grahame-Smith walked away from the project. Grahame-Smith made films such as "Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter" (2012) and recently, "Pride + Prejudice + Zombies." Yeah... that guy. Fans aren't fretting Grahame-Smith's departure though because of his replacement of Nigerian-American filmmaker, Famuyiwa. For those who don't know of Famuyiwa, he directed 2015's "Dope." In my opinion, it was last year's hidden gem and it's available on Netflix so do yourself a favor by viewing it (you won't regret it).
Batman vs. Superman, Warner Bros. has handed the powers that be to DC guru, Geoff Johns. Johns is responsible for almost every pivotal story arc for DC Comics in the last decade. Along side Johns, Warner Bros. executive producer, Jon Berg, will aid in overseeing the entire DC Extended Universe (DCEU). Basically, Johns and Berg will be the Kevin Fiege that DC fans have been wanting to run the show (mainly Johns, not so much Berg). Not to mention, Johns is currently collaborating with Ben Affleck on the script for the Batman solo film rumored to be released in late 2018. Things are looking up for DC and what could be better? Oh, yeah, they just hired one of the most intriguing directors to direct "The Flash"!
Black Panther (2018). Coogler is proving himself to be one the most exciting young directors in Hollywood at the moment with narratives such as "Fruitvaile Station" (2013) and Creed (2015). Again, if you haven't seen these films, what are you doing? Go check them out! Huge points for Marvel on snatching up white-hot talent. I can honestly say the two films I'm most excited for DC and Marvel in 2018 are "The Flash" and "Black Panther." At a time when Hollywood is plagued by turmoil for the demand of diversity in its films, talents like Famuyiwa and Coogler are showing that there is a new horizon for Hollywood. Let's all wish the best for these two to knock it out of the park come 2018.
"Suicide Squad" theatrical release; along with the additions of Geoff Johns in DCEU creative-chief driver seat and Rick Famuyiwa behind the wheel of "The Flash," fans will have to wait impatiently for 2018 to see the results of DC and Warner Bros' risky investment.
Until then, we'll be treated with these DC titles: "Wonder Woman" (June 2017) and "Justice League" (November 2017). And also, Marvel titles: "Doctor Strange" (November 2016), "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2" (May 2017), "Spider-Man: Homecoming" (July 2017), and "Thor: Ragnarok" (November 2017).
