This past weekend DC released the highly anticipated movie “Suicide Squad.” Following their most recent disaster of “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice,” many, including myself, hope that it brings faith back to the more recently dreadful DC cinematic universe. Unlike the other streamline movies, this is a movie that includes a bunch of antiheroes. Batman makes a brief cameo as shown in the trailers, though the main storyline follows Task Force X, otherwise known as the Suicide Squad.
This is a very important movie for DC Studios. Fans, myself included, need their faith restored in them. After watching the Comic-Con preview for "Justice League" there are a few causes of concern for me. Even if the movie is still filming the story is what concerns me. First off, following the events of "Batman v Superman" I really hope they don’t use Superman’s death as a plot device for "Justice League," the reason being that Superman was the guy who had the initial idea to bring all of these heroes together. Second, a couple of things got switched around when moving from the comic to the big screen. Batman was initially the guy who refused to take part in the Justice League. He had the original lone-wolf persona amongst the group. Judging from the preview, that has been switched to Aquaman. Lastly, I know a lot of people will probably have a problem with the fact that Green Lantern has yet to be mentioned or even included in the Justice League marketing. Green Lantern is a huge founding member of the Justice League and to get into that I could write a whole other article.
Now "Suicide Squad" does not have a lot to do with "Justice League." The point being made is that it needs to be good to bring faith back to the fans. Judging from the Rotten Tomatoes reviews it has failed miserably. But every critic differs from one another so maybe I’ll like it or you will. On the other hand, a lot of comic book lovers seem to love the movie because of the characters. The character development in the film is the key reason why fans love it. Another reason why people love the movie is the casting. I have always said this and I’ll say this again: the key to a good movie involves great casting.
It is important to note that DC is not done yet with their lineup of movies. In their attempt to compete with Marvel they are also releasing a couple of standalone movies based on their heroes, including "Wonder Woman" and "Aquaman." Both of which are extremely hyped based on popular opinion. Though it is for good reason that these movies are both highly anticipated. Both of the projects include well-cast actors who have done phenomenal work in their own right. Jason Momoa and Gal Gadot play Aquaman and Wonder Woman, respectively. As for DC’s future, it is all up in the air. The next few projects they release will determine if going to the theatre will be worthwhile. Judging from their most recent work it doesn’t look too hopeful. As for the upcoming projects, there seems to be hope as they are finally listening to their fans and seem to be on the right track.
