10 Things I Learned During My Freshman Year At Dayton

My first year of college is quickly coming to a close, which means I will be spending the majority of my time in the library. Coming into college, I was given a lot of different advice and while it was helpful, some of the advice didn’t apply to me because it was not specific to my school. So I’m giving advice, so to speak, about what I learned during my freshman year at the University of Dayton.

1. Get involved.

Dayton has so many amazing opportunities for students to get involved ranging from Red Scare, Christmas on Campus, CAB (Campus Activities Board), Greek Life, intramural sports and opportunities to perform at Art Street. The best place to learn about and sign up for these events is Up the Orgs.

2. Jimmy John's is open until 4:00 a.m.

Jimmy John's is located on Brown Street and is open both for delivery and walk-ins until four in the morning every single day. This is great for those late night study sessions, or if you want something not from the dinning hall.

3. DD Subs and Sandwiches truck is always a yes.

This amazing food truck is located on the Lawnview Avenue every weekend, sometimes even on Thursdays. These sandwiches are not only unique but are a must for every weekend. My personal favorite are the mac and cheese pulled pork wrap.

4. Always hold the door open for people.

Here at Dayton, it's unspoken rule that if there is a person behind you, even a few steps, you hold the door open. It's part of what makes UD so nice and inviting. It's part of the charm.

5. Do not wear nice shoes when you go out, whether it's the Ghetto, or the bars.

I learned this the hard way. My once sparkling white converse are now permanently brown with mud. Before coming to college, invest in a cheap pair of converse or some kind of sneakers as well as what some call "bar shoes." These are shoes that you don't really care about, meaning the stains and scoffs won't upset you.

6. KU has the best pizza and fruit, Marycrest as the best desserts, and VWK is the best dining hall.

KU's fruit is always fresh and has just the right about of sweetness to it, while they also offer a station that personally makes pizza. Now as for VWK, there's so much to choose from: Sushi Bar, Mongolian Grill, a sandwich station and a Mexican Station. When it comes to Marycrest only two words are needed: Monster Cookie.

7. Keep your door open.

Keeping your door open allows you to meet not only people on your floor, but also meet people that randomly walk down your hallway. This is a great chance for you to meet new people in a chilled out environment.

8. Naps become your best friend.

Naps are important to surviving college, especially learning how to nap anywhere. The biggest key to napping is then being able to wake up and get stuff done.

9. Don't skip class.

You are at college to get an education, therefore skipping classes will do nothing for you. Also skipping a class will cost you around $150 per class (depending on where you go to school).

10. Embrace the weirdness and awesomeness that is Dayton.

Dayton is a very unique school for many reasons, one of them is how nice everyone is, and another is the fact that people wake up at 10:00 a.m., dress in crazy, weird outfits, and go hang out in a neighborhood full of other students. It's also the type of school where men paint themselves in full blue to go to a basketball game. Dayton is unlike any other school.

College is filled with many things, and we're so often lectured to make the right decisions as we head out on our own into the college life. But sometimes it's necessary to indulge in some guilty pleasures as well as just doing things because you can. And honestly, a lot of the time it's inevitable. College is no piece of cake that's for sure, so it's okay to do some things you deep down know you shouldn't....once in a while anyways.
