Classes & Careers

College. The time to stay up all night, eat whatever you want, party, and enjoy the lack of responsibility. At least that's what you tell yourself it's for when you're having pizza for breakfast and trying to finish a paper at 4 a.m. because it's due in your 8 a.m. class. Everyone's had a day that looks like this, maybe even multiple, like weeks? Months? Hey, no shame, it's college.

7 a.m.

Alarm goes off because you told yourself you were going to wakeup extra early before your 9:00 class to finish all that work you didn’t do when you were binge-watching Netflix as a “study break” at 2 a.m. last night (or should I say morning?).

7:30 a.m.

Alarm goes off again because let’s be real, you didn’t get up the first time and probably won’t get up this time. At least you set the alarm though… that counts for something, right?

8 a.m.

Alarm goes off yet again. It’s at this moment you decide you’ll just wear a hat for the day instead of showering, odds are no one will even notice.

8:15 a.m.

A moment of despair. The snooze increments are getting smaller and soon that moment you’ve been avoiding for an hour now, is approaching.

8:30 a.m.

Inner moral struggle – to go to class or skip and get the notes from your friend? Your body’s probably telling you it physically cannot get up out of bed, no matter how much you want it to.

8:40 a.m.

Decide to sleep 5 minutes more and skip breakfast. Sleep > Food.

8:45 a.m.

WAKE UP. At this point you probably don’t even have time for breakfast. Just brush your teeth, throw that hat on, and get a cup of dry Cheerio’s.

9:01 a.m.

Arrive to class only 1 minute late. Swag.

9:01 a.m. to noon

Class, class, and more class. Did you do the reading for your Political Philosophy class? Probably not but improvisation is your thing.

Lunch:

Time for that coffee you’ve been craving all morning. Chug it and head to the library to finish the work for you afternoon classes.

1 p.m. to 3 p.m.

More class more class. This time, you’re proud because you raised your hand and actually said something in one of them. Good for you.

3:30 p.m.

Time to workout because today is the day you start eating healthy and running 7 miles instead of eating fries and pizza and watching Netflix.

5:30 p.m.

Dinner, thank goodness. It’s burgers, sweet potato fries, and freshly baked chocolate cookies, so there goes that healthy eating you told yourself you were starting. Sweet potatoes are a vegetable though so that’s good enough.

6:30 p.m. to 2:00 a.m.

Time to head to the library to start that mountain of work you saved for the day… But you can always get up extra early to finish it before class so no worries.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
