Day in the Life of a Greek Bartender
Shannen Moen

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to bartend at one of your favorite college bars? I interviewed junior Alpha Omicron Pi, Shannen Moen, to find out what it’s really like.

Moen is majoring in Telecommunications and film, with a minor in communication studies. She decided she wanted to pick up a job, in addition to her schoolwork. She has been working at Rounders for almost a month now and has really enjoyed her experience.

Q: Why Rounders? Are they flexible with your class schedule?
A: I mostly work weekends and they are great about working around my class schedule. I really enjoy the management and the atmosphere. I wanted to work here because it's by far the cleanest bar on the strip, which is nice because almost every other bar in this town you leave smelling like a dirty ashtray. I love the music here; there is country downstairs, rap in the back, and house on the roof. It's just an overall really nice bar.

Q: Do you make good money or tips even though we are in a college town?
A:  Shockingly I make great money even though we are in a college town.  Most customers are great about giving a dollar or two per drink. This really helps, and I appreciate it so much when people show gratitude.

Q: Do you ever get hit on because people are trying to get free drinks?
A: As far as getting hit on and stalked, some guys have asked for my number. Guys will make jokes about getting it, but I normally laugh and turn around. Very busy nights I don't have time to stand around with a guy, nor am I interested, because 98% of the time they are all wasted.

Q: Has anything really crazy happened while you are working?
A: I did work a private party for a fraternity once, and some of them were beyond rude. One guy blew smoke in my face, and another guy was so wasted he threw up and got kicked out. That wasn’t very fun to deal with. I've only seen two fights, but I have only been here for a month, so nothing crazy yet.

Q: Has anyone demanded a refund because his or her drink was made the wrong way? Has anyone been rude to you?
A: No one has ever asked me for a refund. One time a girl asked for a double vodka drink, and when I told her the price, she looked at me like I was crazy. She was shocked and told me she didn’t have that kind of money. She also asked what she could get for free, which I responded with “nothing.” Also some people will order something super complicated, maybe three drinks and seven shots, and they won't tip you. That can get really annoying.

Q: What has been a big challenge while working there?
A: My whole family is from the northeast so I'm used to a New York accent.  Sometimes hearing people with a strong southern accent is almost impossible to understand. Others that don't speak English, it’s a challenge for me to comprehend drink orders.

Sorority
Rebekah Lee

I remember my freshman year oh so well. I remember feeling terrified the night before orientation. The one thing that I dreaded the most was not the new people, the new environment, or even the academic pressure. I was dreading having to talk to sorority girls about Recruitment. I remember cutting off and avoiding any Rho Gamma/Panhellenic Officer that came my way during First Week. I looked at them like they had asked me to cut my arm off whenever they asked me if I wanted to rush. To be honest, I did not even know what rush was, but I knew that I did NOT want to be a part of it. To me, it was dumb. It was a waste of money. It was a waste of my time.

And guess what? I did not rush my freshman year. I spent the first half of my freshman year isolating myself from everyone on campus. I spent all of my time in the library, and then (since I was a commuter) went back home once my work was finished.

Tiana would no doubt be disappointed in the food our cafeteria has to offer.

And hopefully she would cook for everyone in her dorm.

She definitley would not take any 8:00 am classes because she would be up late baking and cleaning up the communal kitchen that are available in every dorm.
