A day in the life of a girl without a phone.
I never thought I would be one of those people who had to use their laptop to send messages because their phone was out of the picture. Now that I am using my laptop for texting, I feel like I am in a strange state of mind without my phone in hand. My phone is my alarm clock, music supplier, way of communication and so much more.
Without any notice, my phone stopped working. It refuses to turn on and gives me no signs of vitals.
I realized after not having my phone that I couldn’t do things that I would normally partake in for day-to-day activities.
Sadly, my phone consumes most of my day. I know this is true for a lot of other people in college, but I don’t think people realize how much a cell phone dominates their life until it is no longer there. Or at least that was the case for me.
I wake up in the morning and the first thing I do is check my phone for notifications and messages from other people. If I have none or barely any I always feel like it’s going to be a bad day because I feel as if I am disconnected from the world. This sets a negative tone for the rest of my day.
On the other hand, if I have lots of notifications from other people I feel great and have a positive outlook on the day. This is a terrible perspective to have to rely on notifications for my happiness, but I feel like it’s true not only for me but others as well. Whenever I see a notification for Instagram or another social media platform, it triggers a wave of happiness.
I talked to several of my friends about not having a phone and the reactions I received from them made me laugh because of how genuinely concerned they were for my phone and I. It really is true though, that cell phones consume one’s life. All around me, people are constantly obsessed with their phone. Sometimes I think it’s better to not have cell phones so that people are forced to talk to one another and form those important bonds with others in life.
Overall, it’s frustrating to not have a cell phone but it helped show me how consumed I am with my phone. I think it is important to look up from your phone every once and a while to make those few, key connections in life. You never know who you might meet.
