A Day In The Life Of A Dog

An interview with the cutest dog alive.

A Day In The Life Of A Dog
Mattie Draftz

I consider my dog Honey to be both my best friend and my little sister. Probably the weirdest, craziest, and arguably cutest dog that anyone could ever own, Honey leads an interesting life. However, now that she is a bit older (and blinder), Honey's daily routine has changed a bit. For those of you whom are interested in what those changes are and on what it is like to be Honey Draftz, I interviewed my precious pup to get all of the information so y'all can be in the know. If any of you happen to know Honey personally, you know how hard it is to get her to do what you want. It was not easy to get her to talk to me, but I think you will find that the results are eye opening and inspiring. I hope you enjoy this exclusive interview and all of its glorious details!

"Woof!"

Honey's Story:

Originally from the now-closed pet store, Puppy Palace, Honey found her early puppy-hood to be full of adventure. She was returned by her first owners due to some sort of medical issue and was brought back to Puppy Palace. Honey was then (heavily) discounted and the grandmother of the author happened upon the loving pup during a casual visit to the pet store. Honey's wiggly butt and charisma charmed Grandma immediately and resulted in her purchasing Honey without consulting her family members first.

Honey was a surprise puppy more or less, which made it difficult for her family members to accept her right away. Honey's insane amounts of energy, ability to jump ridiculous heights, and her intent on destructing all kinds of wood, did not help her case very much either. And forget about training - Honey's new family didn't even bother trying. However, the more time that Honey's family spent snuggling with her created an unbreakable bond nurtured by love and fluff.

All was well until Honey got glaucoma in the Winter of 2014, scaring her whole family. Would Honey ever be able to see again? How would this affect her life? Honey ended up getting surgery on both of her eyes in order to relieve her of the pain she was suffering. She was able to keep her eyes, but is now completely blind (or so the doctors say...) and has to receive special eye drops every day. Honey is still able to get around freakishly well and still barks at everything that moves somehow.

Quick Facts:

Name: Honey Draftz

Breed: Bichon Frise and Maltese mix

Birthday: August 16th, 2008 (or sometime around then)

Adoption Date: November, 2008 (maybe around Thanksgiving?)

Age: 7 going on 8 in human years, 49 in dog years

Weight: 16 lbs (18 lbs in full fluff form)

Favorite Foods: Popcorn, Apples, Pretzels, Milkbone treats, and anything from the table

Favorite Activities: Sniffing, barking, licking, and chewing bones

Daily Life:

Honey's daily routine typically consists of the following schedule:

7:00 AM

Wake up, sniff around to make sure other humans are awake in the house (and proceed to jump on their beds and sniff/lick their faces if they are not), take care of "business", have breakfast, and receive first round of eye drops.

"Just ten more minutes Mom!"

8:00 AM - 10:00 AM

Lay down on the kitchen floor and patiently wait for the other humans to come downstairs. Proceed to follow humans around and whine if they go near the counter where the treat box is. If anyone sits down at the table, beg for food regardless of whether or not there is anything on the table. If no human food is intercepted, sniff every crevice under the kitchen cabinets and incessantly lick the floor. Repeat this for every meal and throughout the day frequently.

"Lookin' for scraps!"

"Please share!"

11:00 AM - 2:00 PM

Get fed lunch and repeat kitchen routine. Charge at and bark-scream at anyone that nears the door to go outside or touches a pair of keys/purse/pair of shoes/coat/etc. Perhaps might scratch at the door to the patio to make it clear that the bugs out there must be sniffed. Fall asleep when laying down anywhere for more than five minutes, but not before scratching at the blankets/floor/pillow/bed first! Oh, and don't forget to be pet constantly throughout the day!

"The perfect napping spot... under the table!"

"Getting the best spa treatment while napping in the best spot!"

4:00 PM - 5:00 PM

Beg every single human in the house for dinner. Almost always get fed dinner early as a result of this begging. Lick the floor for an hour or so afterwards if not full from meal. If licking commences early, guard the doorways to humans' bedrooms upstairs by laying in front of them.

"There's no escaping now! You'll have to get through me to get to the door!"

6:00 PM - 7:00 PM

Sniff everything, lick the couch, and nap some more!

"What's that smelly smell I smell?

"Always nap with one ear open"

8:00 PM

Receive more eye drops and squirm around a bunch, lick everything in sight as a stress reliever.

"Living on the edge!"

9:00 PM

Run up the stairs and snuggle in bed with my favorite human. Snore and kick human throughout the entire night and maybe bark a little bit too. It was quite the busy day!

"Goodnight, sleep tight, dream of milkbones tonight!"

"As a dog, I find that it's important to have a consistent routine every day. Too much variance from day to day can result in over-excitement and most likely vomit," Honey says.

Many thanks to Honey for allowing me to conduct an interview and take pictures! There is so much to learn from such a fluffy dog and I am thankful that I get the chance to share this with you all!

New year, new semester, not the same old thing. This semester will be a semester to redeem all the mistakes made in the previous five months.

1. I will wake up (sorta) on time for class.

Let's face it, last semester you woke up with enough time to brush your teeth and get to class and even then you were about 10 minutes late and rollin' in with some pretty unfortunate bed head. This semester we will set our alarms, wake up with time to get ready, and get to class on time!

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.
