"Doctor Who," a show that's been running on BBC since 1963, is finally coming off of it's break next week on September 19. This being my absolute favorite show, I decided to write about my favorite Doctor from the series. "Doctor Who" is a science fiction TV show on BBC about a man from another world who travels through time and space, saving lives wherever he goes. He calls himself the Doctor. He is the last of his kind and has that burden on him always. The reason this show has been able to go on for so long is because his species has 12 re-generations, so when one Doctor dies, a new Doctor comes in his place. The Doctor brings companions with him so the show isn't just one man traveling all the time, either. If you haven't seen it, you should at least watch a few episodes. It's worth it!
Now that the show is coming back for another season so soon, I want to talk about my favorite Doctor of the series. His name is David Tennant and he was the Tenth Doctor.
David Tennant had grown up watching Doctor Who and dreaming of being the Doctor one day. He got to live that dream starting in 2005, and that in itself is inspiring to me. He played the role in such a great way, too. Christopher Eccleston, who was the Ninth Doctor, was a lot more serious when he portrayed the Doctor. While that wasn't bad in any way and I still loved the show, I was happy to see a more lighthearted Doctor who could be crazy but still get done whatever needed to get done.
I really loved David Tennant's companion, as well. Rose Tyler was the companion who started with the Ninth Doctor but continued on for some time with the Tenth Doctor, too. She seemed to help the Doctor stay on task when he got too caught up in something else, and was always there to join in on the great laughs. She was around longer than most companions are in this show, but I never got tired of seeing her and I don't think anyone else did either.
There is so much more that I can say about why David Tennant is my favorite Doctor. He's funny at all the right moments. He's not a very serious guy but he knows when to take a moment seriously. He figures out how to get out of deathly situations that I could never have been able to do. Yes, I understand his actions are written in the script and it's not technically him that is coming up with these ideas. However, when an actor is truly a good actor, you don't see someone playing out a scene that they've done a million times and don't even have to think about anymore. A truly good actor is able to look like everything is still coming out of his head and in that split second the decision is being made. It doesn't look like a scripted scene and feels much more real. David Tennant does this so well, and I admire him as an actor as well as my favorite Doctor.
If I were to tell people to watch one episode of Doctor Who, I would say watch "Blink" from Season 3 with David Tennant. It's a bit different than other episodes because it's not focused on the Doctor specifically but a person who doesn't even realize she's getting help from the Doctor. It helps give an idea what Doctor Who is all about, at least in my opinion. If I've convinced you to at least watch that episode, I will be happy. Maybe you'll decide to watch the whole show, too. But catch up quickly, the 9th season is starting in a week!
