David Stern became commissioner of the NBA February 1,1984 and 30 years later on February 1,2014 he ended his tenure as the longest running NBA commissioner. He helped create and looked after such projects like granting Toronto a NBA team, spread the game of basketball to international areas, as well as helping the NBA gain amazing international talent, launch a developmental and women's league and many more moments.
Phil's Reaction: It was a surprising and sad way to kick off 2020. It completely threw me off guard when I heard about the brain hemorrhage three weeks ago. I believed during his tenure he was running the golden age of basketball as long as creating and assisting with many things that helped shaped the NBA and their players today. I always looked forward to seeing him on draft night as he would love to play around with the crowd and their love/hate relationship with him. He created a phenomenal legacy that will be remembered for years to come.
Akeem and I are sending prayers and condolences to David Stern's family and friends. May he Rest In Peace and enjoy all the basketball he wants in heaven and run into a couple of old friends there.
