Daughter of The King. Umm...what?
"For his Spirit joins with our spirit to affirm that we are God's children. And since we are his children, we are his heirs. In fact, together with Christ we are heirs of God's glory. But if we are to share his glory, we must also share his suffering." Romans 8:16-17
"And, 'I will be a Father to you, and you will be my sons and daughters, says the Lord Almighty.'" 2 Corinthians 6:18
This is a phrase that I have heard over and over this week. These are the thoughts that I have caught myself automatically thinking: "What do you mean I'm a daughter of The King? It's a strange enough phrase on its own, but it's even more unbelievable when it's being applied to me. I'm just ordinary, nothing special. I do love Jesus a whole lot, but to be called a daughter of The King?? That's a pretty lofty title for a girl from nowhere, Missouri."
The problem with these thoughts lies in the fact that this title seemed so absurd to me. Shouldn't this sound normal since I know that I am a child of God? It should, but it doesn't. Why is it so hard for us to believe that we are worthy of the love of Jesus and of a title such as this? A big part of the issue comes from lie after lie that we have been fed by our society--and that we have begun to listen to. We have come to believe that we're just average and that there's nothing special about us.
This is a load of bull. You want to know why? Genesis 1:27 spells it out for us.
"So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them."
The God of the entire universe made you in his image. When we start to believe that we don't really matter and when we fail to see the beauty in ourselves, we are essentially telling Jesus that his opinion doesn't matter--that the fact that he made us to look like him means nothing to us. I don't know about you, but I don't want to tell the God of the universe that something he made doesn't matter.
So, we have to guard our ears and hearts. We have to begin to believe that we are worthy. We have to remind ourselves and each other that, because we are children of God, we are royalty. We are daughters of The Most High King.
"For we are God's handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do." Ephesians 2:10
