To My Future Daughter

There are some things you need to know.

You are so beautiful. Don't ever let anyone tell you anything different. That's the one lesson that I would like to teach you, but there is so much more. Always remember that life is not easy and that it's important to work hard. As cliche as it sounds, you can do anything if you put your mind to it.

Your first heartbreak. I know it's going to be hard. But I want you to know this: love is war. You just have to find that person who is worth fighting for. But I want you to keep in mind the fact that you don't need another person to make you happy. I want you to find love; you deserve it. However, it's important to love yourself first before you love someone else. Be happy with who you are as a human being and I don't want you to ever feel like you need someone else to bring you joy. The right man will come along, though, don't you worry.

Take a look in the mirror. I want you to be confident. Don't hate your body or try to be something you're not. I did that for years and it caused me a lot of emotional pain. Always remember that you were born to be real, not perfect. But despite that, you're perfect in my eyes.

Beauty comes from the soul, and it shines through your eyes. A beautiful heart is more valuable than a pretty exterior because, after all, looks fade. Over the course of your lifetime, you will meet people who are rotten on the inside but don't pay them any mind.

Keep your head up and keep looking forward. Beating yourself up over the past won't do any good mostly because you can't change it, and it will only drag you down. You'll make mistakes. Lots of them. But it's important to remember that these mistakes make you human. Don't let your past define you, but always remember what it taught you.

Forgive and forget. It's a lot easier said than done, but if you harbor bitter feelings, it will only tie you down. Don't dampen your spirit with hatred or anger. Smile even in the toughest moments and get back up when you get knocked down. It's not about the struggles we go through, it's about how we overcome the obstacles in our path.

Appreciate the small things in life and never take anything for granted because as soon as something is given to you, it can be taken away. It's human nature to not appreciate and value what we have been blessed with, and we sometimes forget that things can change within a blink of an eye.

Someday you're going to have a family of your own, and when you have a daughter, you'll want to make sure that she is protected, loved and safe. And that's what I want for you. Stay strong, good hearted, and never lose that sparkle. I know you're going to make a difference in someone's life one day. Especially mine.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies.
