"Catfish: The TV Show" stars Nev and Max have been dubbed catfish catching experts — at least when it comes to online dating. Their show gives tips for online dating anyone can easily use to find out if their online significant other is real.
Here are some things they've taught me when it comes to those fishy dating profiles.
1. Google reverse image search is the best
This is the coolest tip I've learned when it comes to debunking a profile. Going to Google images will allow you to drag and drop saved photos into the search bar and will pull up web pages that photo is on. This is a good way to find if that photo is used on different social media profiles or dating apps.
2. You're not dating a model or a rapper
Every "too" attractive person is always either a model, rapper, singer or businessperson. Chances are, if they are any of these, you're probably not getting the truth. Especially if they're saying they're a well-known public figure.
I doubt Katy Perry is really on Tinder.
3. Few photos means fewer chances that it's a real person
If your significant other has only sent a couple photos or you've only seen their social media, that's a red flag. They should be able to send you selfies just for you that are real and original.
4. Broken cameras equal broken hearts
Let's face it, nobody likes to FaceTime, but if you're in a long distance relationship, sometimes that's all you have. There are a front and back camera and laptops exist. If both of their cameras on their phone don't work, they need to get a new phone.
5. DO NOT send them money
Don't ever, ever, ever send anyone you have never met in person. Send them flowers, a card. Anything other than money. You never know what they're really using that money for.
6. A lacking social circle is not a good sign
If he has less than 15 friends or followers on social media, question the legitamacy. Especially if the profile has been around for a while. It's normal to have more than at least 100 followers and friends across social media.
7. Never meet someone you've never met alone
You never know who is going to show up if you don't know for 100% who you're talking to. It's so much safer to meet someone in a public setting or with a group of friends. If could be someone completely different than who you were expecting.
