Dating On Campus

No car, no problem.

Dating On Campus

You might be stuck on campus, but that doesn't mean you can’t explore. San Luis Obispo’s hidden gems are scattered throughout Cal Poly’s vast campus. So this is for all you car-less freshman out there that need some better date ideas than just red-rad. I am here to tell you that campus is your oyster.

1. Go get lost in Poly canyon

You know it’s going to be a good day when you take them to the rolling hills of Ireland. OK, not actually Ireland, but honestly the resemblance is so uncanny, you feel as if you just touched down in Dublin. Your date will be so busy taking in the views, she won’t notice that you're short of breath and about 20 feet behind her. Nonetheless, don't be afraid to get lost in the green and wander through the hillsides because there is so much to be seen.

2. Swing on serenity swing

Nothing says romance quite like a steep hike with an incredible view and, better yet, a swing to sit on when you finally arrive. Cal Poly’s infamous serenity swing has captured the hearts of many students and residents. It’s beautiful location makes it a must-see, whether you live on campus or not. Luckily for you freshmen, you’re only a few steps away from some of the greenest hills and greatest views I’ve ever had the pleasure to lay eyes on.

3. Meander through the architectural graveyard

The architectural graveyard is not just a wow-week destination, this extraordinary oddity should be visited year round. Not only will you entertain your date with all the attractions along the way, but you can even take this experience up a notch by bringing a hammock. I know the sign says don’t climb on the structure, but who really follows that anyway, so hook your hammock up and hang out with your date. I promise you, this will be a night she’ll never forget.

4. Go bowl

Hit the lanes for a night of dimmed lights and catchy music that will really set the mood. Cal Poly is home to the only bowling alley in San Luis Obispo, so we should really make use of perks such as these.

5. Hike the P

The P may seem a bit treacherous and steep, but it’s the perfect place to just sit down enjoy the view and each other’s company. I’d recommend making this hike a sunset one, because what girl doesn’t love a good sunset pic.

6. Hit up the rec

You may think of the rec as a place to just get swole, but there is a lot more to it. For starters, you can play racquetball and build up some friendly competition. If the weather permits, you can always take it outside to the pool and play some beach volleyball or lounge around in the water. Then, if you are really trying to get physical, you could always take a workout class together. The rec center is filled with great ways to keep active and, better yet, keep your date entertained.

7. Smell the flowers at the arboretum

Most people don’t think to walk up to the horse ranch area located between the IM fields and PCV, but it is well worth the trip. The gorgeous flowers and plants make it a great place to explore and if the festive gardens aren’t enough to hold your attention, there is a small putting green that will definitely grab your attention, because who doesn't love mini golf?

5 Things To Do That Are Better Than Writing A Paper

Don't waste your time trying to write that paper when there are so many more interesting things you could be doing.

Writing a paper is never fun and is rarely rewarding. The writer's block, the page requirement, be specific, but don’t summarize, make sure you fixed any grammatical errors, did you even use spellcheck? and analyze, analyze, analyze.

Papers can be a major pain. They take up so much time and effort that by the end of the process you hate yourself and you hate the professor for making life so difficult. Questions of your existence start roaming in your mind. Am I even cut out for college if I can’t write a single paper? Am I even capable of taking care of myself if I lack the energy to open my laptop and start typing?

I can barely remember back when I was the only child. Most would say it’s because it is extremely difficult to remember things as a toddler but I would say it's because I was bored until my sister came along. My mother always says how important the "sister bond" is and with every year that passes I realize how right she is. Instead of writing a novel about all of the wonderful things there are about having a sister I decided to list a few of them instead.

It is the time of our lives that we are beginning to enter the adult world and most of us, if not all of us, have no idea what we are doing. It's like starting a video game, but skipping the tutorial. We're all just running around aimlessly hoping we accidentally do something right that moves us along the right path. Now that graduation has just happened, or is right around the corner for some of us, it's time to start thinking about how we are going to take care of ourselves once we are on our own.

If you’re anything like me, you love a good cup of coffee. My coffee always comes from Starbucks; I refuse to drink it from anywhere else. Over the years, it’s become one of my biggest addictions.
