College is a constant struggle between balancing classes, homework and trying to get involved. On top of academics, attempting to arrange social events with friends is tough. With the cost of college constantly increasing, there is no wonder why students rarely have money to go off campus and experience what the world has to offer. What if I told you that you could experience these things without breaking out your wallet? Arranging a day out with your friends or a date with your sweetheart can be easier and cheaper than you think.

1. Having a picnic.

Regardless of where you live, this is an easy date to plan. Grab a basket, your favorite foods and a cozy blanket and pick a spot under a shady tree. Whether your picnic food is as simple as peanut butter and jelly sandwiches or a complex plate of various cheeses, this day is sure to leave a smile on everyone's face. Also be sure to take advantage of the location around you. Head to a park, a beach or a grassy hill—you can create the perfect picnic anywhere.

2. Stargazing or watching the sunset.

There is nothing better than a starry summer night, so why not enjoy it? Our lives are so busy that we often forget of the beautiful nature surrounding us. Again, any location will do and be sure to pack snacks, pillows and blankets. If stargazing isn't your thing, take in the colorful horizon as the sun sets.

3. Playing a fun sports game.

You don't have to be a professional soccer player to kick a ball around. Find some grass and play soccer, find a hoop and play basketball or find a court and grab a couple tennis rackets. Running and biking are also great ways to see the local terrain. Exercising is a lot more fun when playing a game, not to mention doing it surrounded by people you love.

4. Taking a trip to a free museum.

Check your local city museums for special events, promotions or even happy hour. Many museums offer free admission to college students with a valid student ID or during certain holidays and events. Happy hour is typically during the early evening when museum time is slow and thus many museums may offer free admission. Take advantage of your local treasures at no charge.

5. Partaking in cultural events.

Chances are if you live near a city, many concert, festivals and cultural events are at your fingertips. Art festivals typically occur in the summer months with an abundance of outdoor tents and great food. Not to mention, your city may put on many local events. Check online for upcoming free concerts or try to snag some free tickets off of a radio station contest. This is the perfect way to broaden your horizons and experience the culture around you.

Next time you are planning a date, forgo the local movie theatre, movie marathon or chain restaurant. Step outside the box and experience a memory you will never forget—not to mention it won't cost you a dime.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week.
