On Sunday, Feb. 1, runners raced across campus and participated in the Dash for Diabetes 5K Run/Walk hosted by the Rho Chapter of Delta Epsilon Psi Fraternity (DEPsi).
Delta Epsilon Psi Fraternity, Inc. is a South Asian based social fraternity. DEPsi is one of the youngest ,but fastest growing organizations in the Multicultural Greek Council at the UF, with already over 40 plus brothers since their founding on Feb. 8, 2009. They uphold the values of brotherhood, discipline, and commitment and have recently been awarded chapter status in the past semester.
Dash for Diabetes was the first ever 5K event they hosted, and these brothers were very proud of the successful turnout this past weekend. Participants included Greeks, not only from the Multicultural Greek Council, but members of PC and IFC were also spotted. DEPsi made the effort to reach out and appeal to various crowds, especially avid gym goers by tabling for weeks outside Southwest Recreation and Fitness Center.
The course commenced at the Commuter Lot and extended as far as the Southwest area and beyond. Despite how early it was, runners, and even walkers, were excited to get started. Spectators and DEPsi brothers were also present to cheer the participants on as they took off from the starting line and also passed the finish line. The first twenty-five registrants received a free Dash for Diabetes tee, and light refreshments were provided to all.
As the first annual 5K event to support their philanthropy, Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF), DEPsi was thrilled to have hosted a new event to raise awareness about their cause. Dash for Diabetes raised over $1000, and all of it was donated to JDRF. This organization funds Type 1 diabetes research and strives to advance its treatment and prevention and hopefully in the future find a cure to Type 1.
The brothers of Delta Epsilon Psi would like to thank everyone that participated, came out to support or donated to their cause. They could not have been any happier with the success of the first annual Dash for Diabetes, and they look forward to continuing and enlarging this philanthropic event in the future.
