For many people currently on campus, this summer marks the halfway point for our Dartmouth careers. Having been here for two years, it might feel like you've been everywhere and know everything on campus. Or, if you are like me, you may still have no idea where half the dorm and academic buildings are. Regardless, there is a surprising high number of places and activities on campus that remain unknown and unexplored to people for the duration of their time at Dartmouth. Don't be on of those people! Here is a list of some of hidden treasures at Dartmouth.

1. The Woodworking Shop

Located in the Hop, the Woodworking Shop is open to all Dartmouth students, regardless of prior experience. After an orientation session, you can swing by during open hours and work on projects of your choice. Instructors are always available to help you. Get more info (workshop dates and open hours) here.

2. The Jewelry Shop

Also located in the Hop, The Donald Claflin Jewelry Studio is an incredible way to funnel creative energy into cool projects of your choice. Learn more here.

3. Book Arts Studio

Located on the ground floor of Berry (around the corner from the Orozco Mural Room), the Book Arts Studio is a place where you can learn everything from letterpress printing to bookbinding. You can use the workshops to make signs to decorate your room or advertise events for your group. Go here for more information.

4. Meditation Room

The Tucker Meditation Room is located in North Fairbanks Hall, which is attached to Tucker (the white building next to Foco). Enter the side door of the building and go down the stairs, and you will find a peaceful room filled with meditation cushions. This room is open Monday through Friday and open to everyone!

5. Pine Park

Filled with trails ripe for walking or jogging, Pine Park is beautiful forest of old pine trees that exists on the outskirts of campus. It traces along the edges of the Hanover Country Club Golf Course-- you can enter the trail systems by the Hanover Country Club House (next to the DOC House). Look here for more detailed directions.

6. Ceramics Studio

Open only until July 21st this term, the Ceramics Studio is across the Connecticut River, and is open to all Dartmouth Students during its open hours. Get more info here.

7. Massage Chairs

Located on the third floor of Robo, the Student Wellness Center (a great resource for all things wellness-related) has massage chairs available for student use! Definitely something to take advantage of during the stressful parts of the term.

8. The Greenhouse

You don't have to go to the Organic Farm to see things grow! There is a greenhouse on the fourth floor of the Life Sciences Center, and you can stop by between 8:30 and 4 during the week.

9. Nathan's Garden

This is my personal favorite. Located at the corner of Maple Street and Downing Road (you can type in Nathan's Garden into Google Maps), Nathan's Garden is a beautiful botanical garden with benches, fountains, and endless natural beauty.

A Few Thoughts Every College Freshman Has

The transition into adulthood is never easy

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
