The Pistons mistake of the 2003 Draft

I say all of this with no hard feelings to Darko. But let's be real here. The guy isn't even in the NBA anymore and there is a reason for that. He just wasn't that good. From what I understand, Darko was in such high demand to be drafted that year (2003) because every team was looking for the next Dirk. Darko may have had the potential to be that for the pistons, but he just didn't pan out. And maybe I shouldn't be too hard on Darko. After all, he isn't the only pick that a franchise has made a mistake on. There are a lot of other players like Greg Oden and Kwame Brown who just didn't pan out in the NBA and there careers were just not good. The reason Darko is high up there on that list is mainly because of what was available that 2003 draft. So here is what was going on that draft. There were a lot of players in the first 4 or 5 picks who were destined to be all stars in the NBA. Some of those players included LeBron James, Chris Bosh, Dwayne Wade, and Carmelo Anthony. The Cleveland Cavaliers were the first pick in that draft and it was obvious that they were going to choose the best player in the draft which was LeBron James. So now that LeBron James is off the board, there are 3 other great players that the Detroit Pistons can choose from. So what exactly were the Pistons looking for? That year they needed a solid power forward to fit in with their starting lineup. They had every other position filled with Chauncey Billups and Richard Hamilton at their guards, Tayshaun Prince as the Small Forward, and Big Ben Wallace at Center. So it was apparent at what they were looking for. But as history has told us in the draft, you should always look for the best player available and not try and pick up what you need. The same mistake was made in 1984 with the Portland Trail Blazers drafted Sam Bowie over the greatest player of all time Michael Jordan. So the Pistons can't make that same mistake. Unfourtanetly they did. With the second pick, they decided to draft Darko and although it seemed like the greatest thing at the time, it turned into a disaster. He just didn't fit well with the team and the Pistons ended up having to go through free agency and pick up bad boy Rasheed Wallace. That move ended up benefiting us and in 2004, we ended up winning the NBA Finals over the Los Angeles Lakers. As great as it was at the time, now we wonder what would've happened if we had drafted someone else. Tayshaun Prince in an interview with CBS Sports recently said that if the Pistons had drafted Carmelo over Darko, they possibly could have won 4 titles. It is very bold for Tayshaun to say that, but he may be right. And also think about the other guys. Wade could have been amazing in Detroit and Bosh would have complemented Ben Wallace very well. But as we learn, we can't change the past. And even though the Detroit Pistons made a mistake, we know they learned from it and hope that sometime in the future they can bring another title back to Detroit.

Taylor Swift in orange dress playing a moss-covered piano on stage with bright lights.

A three-and-a-half-hour runtime. Nine Eras. Eleven outfit changes. Three surprise songs. Zero breaks. One unforgettable evening. In the past century, no other performer has put on an electric performance quite like Taylor Swift, surpassing her fans ‘wildest dreams’. It is the reason supporters keep coming back to her shows each year. Days later, I’m still in awe of the spectacle ‘Miss Americana’ puts on every few days in a new city. And, like one of Taylor’s exes, has me smiling as I reminisce about the memories of the night we spent together.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.
