"Ashes of Ariandel" is the first of two downloadable content (DLC) additions for "Dark Souls III." "Dark Souls" and "Bloodborne" have had DLC that were worth the money for their boss battles, area exploration, and the amount of time it takes to complete it. They involved people that were talked about in the lore of the base game, such as Artorias of the Abyss, Ludwig, the Accursed/Holy Blade, Kos (or some say, Kosm) etc.; "Ashes of Ariandel" only had two bosses and a very misleading trailer. In the trailer, you see Oceiros, the Consumed King, Nameless King, and Lothric and Lorian. Oceiros is believed to have had an affair with Gwynevere, daughter to Gwyn, Lord of Cinder, and had a child named Ocelot. Oceiros, before and during your fight with him, talks about his son, asking where he’s gone off too. Yet, we never get to see Ocelot. Nameless King is the disowned first born of Gwyn. He was disowned for saving a dragon, despite Gwyn’s hatred and genocide of them all. Lastly, you see a clip of Lorian fighting. Lothric and Lorain knew their fates as Lords of Cinder and instead of enkindling the flame, they chose to let the flame die, causing the unkindled ones to rise. The enkindling of the flame first started with Gwyn to keep life going. These three bosses are all related to Gwyn somehow and yet the "Ashes of Ariandel" DLC had very little plot relevant characters or bosses, aside from the young painter. The trailer includes those three bosses and we don’t even get anything relevant to them either. It feels as though they were added to the trailer just as filler to meet a decent trailer time. The landscape itself is very short as well. It’s only two areas that circle around each other. In "Bloodborne" you were given three very large areas, five bosses, and a variety of weaponry and clothing. "Dark Souls III" gives you two areas, two bosses, two sets of clothes, five spells, and five weapons. Aside from that, "Dark Souls III" has nice layouts to the areas, and the boss fights, although short, are very nostalgic and bring something new to the table with the last fight. I give "Dark Souls III: Ashes of Ariandel" a 7.3 out of 10. I expect better from the next DLC.
