D.A.R.E., also known as The Drug Abuse Resistance Education program has taken marijuana off their list of gateway drugs, according to their website. D.A.R.E. which is known for educating children and teenagers about the hazards of drug abuse has not made a statement about the removal yet.
A gateway drug is defined as a drug that introduces one to harder and more addictive drugs. The only items left on the D.A.R.E. gateway list are tobacco and alcohol. Many people are questioning the reasoning behind this decision. A few possibilities are the pro-marijuana campaign that has recently been introduced, or the legalization of marijuana in various states. This is interesting, due to the fact of how long the drug has been on the list, and how long D.A.R.E. has been around. Another reason the drug may have been taken off the list is the medicinal reasons that marijuana is associated with.
Although there have been no answers yet, it is obvious that a new generation of marijuana is on the come up. It will be interesting to see the future of marijuana and where it takes society.
