Vaping Doesn't Mean You're A Healthy Smoker

The truth is that no one is actually sure what the long term outcomes of vaping are yet.

My parents are long time smokers. They are both '50s babies. A time when doctors and nurses smoked in the delivery room. If you ask them when they started smoking, my mom admits to trying her first cigarette before she was even a teenager. My Dad began a little later in life, and quit many times, but the sweet taste of nicotine continued to drag him back into its grasp.

My sister (the asthmatic) and I remember many car rides stiffed in smoke. We were getting tired of trying to breathe through the nasty, clouded air. So for Christmas, we decided to invest in both of our parents futures and buy each one of them a vape pen, hearing that vaping was better for your lungs than damaging cigarettes. This “better for you” option comes with a price tag that isn’t necessarily better for everyone.

After hearing a few doubts, I decided to look into things myself. Vaping is popular, and where our parents were invested in cigarettes, our generation is equally obsessed with vaping. I’d like to think as Millennials, we put a little more consideration into what we’re putting in our bodies.

But when it comes to bad habits, is one actually better for you than the other?

It turns out that vaping was actually invented in the early 1960’s by a man named Herbert Gilbert. The 1960’s however; was not an era that believed smoking cigarettes was bad for you.

Big tobacco companies actually preached quite the opposite. Smoking was displayed as sexy, fun and alluring. If you weren’t a smoker, you weren't in style. So who needed anything like a vape pen or E-cigarette?

No one, until the 2000’s.

When the medical field started to discover the true horrors of smoking, people frantically sought healthier alternatives. What could they do to calm their fidgeting and their nerves?

Smoking is now associated with lung cancer, COPD and lung disease. While we've had many years to discover the long term effects of smoking, we haven't had the same opportunity to understand what vaping does over the course of long periods of times.

Vaping, some will argue, is not just a habit, but a life style. There are some positives when it comes to vaping instead of smoking, but the truth is that no one is actually sure what the long term outcomes of vaping are yet. In order to get an idea of both the positive and negative effects of vaping, we are going to have to wait and see what happens.

Plus, it's not exactly the easiest thing in the world to get a smoker to convert to vaping.

11 Things Summer Nannies Can Relate To

As a college student, being a nanny over the summer is both enjoyable and challenging. Underneath the seemingly perfect trips to the pool or countless hours spent playing Monopoly are the obstacles that only nannies will understand. Trading in your valuable summer vacation in return for three months spent with a few children less than half your age may seem unappealing, but so many moments make it rewarding. For my fellow summer nannies out there, I know you can relate.

If it hurts now, it'll hurt again. Not because you're gullible or naive, only because you fall fast, hard, and you do it every time.

We fall each and every time with the complete and utter confidence that someone will be there to catch us. Now that person we SWORE we were never going to fall for has our hearts, and every time we see them our palms start sweating. The butterflies in our stomach start to soar and our hearts are entirely too close to bursting out of our chests.

Growing up I have always wanted to own a horse. My grandparents own a well known equestrian facility in Georgia, so I have been riding since I was born. A bond between a person and their horse is a bond so strong that it cannot be broken. Everywhere I went I wanted to be around horses, even forcing my family to go on trail rides during vacations. Horses have been a part of my life for as long as I can remember has taught me great responsibility, as well as 14 things that all equestrians can relate to.

College is super hard. Between working, studying, and having a social life, it feels like a struggle to just keep afloat.

I understand. When you feel like your drowning and there's no way to stay afloat I understand that it feels like everyone else is doing just fine. I understand all the frustration, long nights in the library, and that feeling that you want to just throw in the towel. I understand that sometimes it's too hard to get out of bed because your brain is already filled with too much information to remember. I understand because I am also feeling pretty burnt out.

No Matter How Challenging School Gets, You Have To Put Your Health First — A Degree Won't Mean Anything If You're Dead

Some of the best advice I've ever received was from my social studies teacher in sophomore year of high school. He stated, "If you don't know it at midnight, you're not going to know it for the 8 a.m. exam, so get some sleep."

It's such a simple piece of advice, but it holds so much accuracy and it's something that the majority of college students need to hear and listen to. "All-nighters" are a commonality on college campuses in order to cram in studying for an exam that is typically the next day.
